Nooses placed on Black firefighters' gear at station
Feb. 17, 2006 01:30 PM
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A downtown fire station was shut down Friday after two Black firefighters reported finding hangman's nooses on their gear when they arrived at work.
Mayor John Peyton has asked the city's Human Rights Commission and the General Counsel's Office to investigate. Nooses have in the past been used by racists to intimidate blacks because of the connection to lynching.
"These actions are morally reprehensible and I have requested an immediate investigation of the incident by all necessary and appropriate parties," Peyton said in a statement released by his office.
"This type of behavior does not represent our city or our fire department will not be tolerated," the mayor said.

Sorry guys, I have to disagree. I don't know the whole story, but something is really wrong here. Just because we don't know both sides, we know a report was made. If guys in the station did this, they should be punished. If someone outside the service came in and did this, they too should be punished. And if a false report was made, I think it is equally reprehensible. Anyway you look at it, there is a serious problem.

So what exactly are you disagreeing with? No one said there isnt a big problem here. All we are saying is dont jump to conclusions and "hang these people" (sorry for the bad pun) out to dry without knowing both sides.Proud East Coast Traditionalist.

Itried doing a search on the phrase "Don't jump to conclusions" but the site search couldn't handle it. Or I don't know how to do it, one or the other. Anyway, I'm with those who say that we should stay informed, but not become judgemental without information from a report based on a thorough investigation. Unfortunately, Jacksonville's Fire/Rescue department has been besieged over the past few years with discrimination/reverse disrimination accusations & lawsuits. I would hope that we as a brotherhood were past assinine acts such as these (regardless of who did it). However, it would seem that we aren't. I have worked closely with Jax Fire and have found their entire organization to be first rate. The investigation into these incidents will be thorough and I am sure that any punishments handed out will be appropriate.
Remember guys, jumping to conclusions and critisizing ANYONE before all of the facts are made public do a disservice to our entire profession.
