    Default Decatur Hiring

The city of Decatur is hiring. Starting salary is just under $42,000. We run 5 engines, 3 trucks, 1 squad and BC car out of 7 stations. Our run stats for last year were:

    382 – 1st Alarms (structure fires)
5387 – EMS Alarms (medical, automobile accidents, etc.)
515 – Supervisory Alarms (Smoke alarm activations, water flow alarms, pull stations, etc.)
1698 – Still Alarms (illegal burning, car fires, gas leaks)
    5 – 2nd Alarms (additional companies needed)
    1 – 3rd Alarms (additional companies needed)
3 – Airport Alerts (incidents involving aircraft or the airport)
6 – Fire Investigation (investigator requested by police, previous fire where no fire company responded)
    7997 – Total Incident Count

    Default wish i could test

Yeah i heard, I was going to try to test come April 1st but I won't be 21 til October, instead of March 27th. I might come by anyway just to check it out and try to become a little familliar with the testing that goes on.

    Default Dfd

Squad1LT I am going to come over and take the test. Nothing against anyother fulltime dept in the area but DFD is the sh#t. I am a volunteer and put myself through the IFSI firefighter 2 academy, hazmat Ops, truck Ops, EMT-B, and many others. I am only 21. With my exp as a voly and the certs that I have do you think I am a strong canadate?

I know DFD runs as EMT-I but I have been having trouble finding an EMT-I class with all the problems the state has.

Also I have heard several rumors you might be able to clear up.
Is DFD going to 4 man companys?
    Is DFD building another station?
Is DFD hiring 5 or 16?

The last list the chief was able to pick off the top 20% on the list any order he wanted. So if you have EMT and another guy doesn't you will have a better shot at getting hired because it will save the city money not having to put you through EMT class. You will still have to go through FF 2 academy though. We are already staffed with 4 man but it isn't mandatory so with days off, etc we are more usually running with 3. I wouldn't hold my breath for a mandatry 4 man all the time. Another station is needed, but that costs money. We do have a new fire chief so a new station might be a possibility but that is only guessing. We hired 11 off the last list. I can definetly probably see 5 at least going off the next list.

    Default Dfd

Will only being 21 hurt me at all, I know I am old enough to test but, I have heard that depts (not DFD inparticular) like hiring the age of 23 and beyond.

Also is the city making a comeback at all from loosing some major employers, is there growth, loosing or just holding steady with population and business?

Yes DFD runs ILS engines and trucks because I know 2 of there trucks run as quints and have there own first due areas. I dont know if there tower ladder is ILS or not, but I think everything they have is ILS

Yes, all the companies have to have at least one EMT-I on it. Even the Tower which maybe will run 1 EMS run a year.
