    Default Traditions & Superstitions

Hi. I have tried researching firefighting traditions and superstitions on this website, but have had a hard time finding what I am looking for. I am looking for superstitions that firefighters have, or traditions that you follow. If anyone could point me in the right direction, or post traditions/superstitions that you have in your firehouse, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Well traditions vary all across the country and there are so many that are common throughout I'm not even going to try. As for superstitions I am a very superstitious person. I personally like to wear the same shirts to work or the same type of socks. And some other things that I do that are partially routine! For example I usually check the rig at the begining of each tour in the same order (for the most part)!

Yeah, make the department do it for you.

Other than that, looking salty is only that, you earn your respect by your actions on the fireground. Not by what your gear looks like. Just take a look at the fools in the recent videos. Bet they didnt wash their gear either.

Im not saying wash it like some vollies wash their piece, but no need for months and months of service to be carried with you on all your runs.

I believe the hairbag was used to collect the hair from the horses when they were groomed. I want to say that the hair was mixed with plaster to give it some more strength back in the days when plaster and lath was in use. But I could be wrong about that

I think the long mustache was the original SCBA, the idea was it would filter some of the smoke. I think they also used to grow long beards, dip them in water and stick them in their mouths when they went into fire buildings.

    Default Superstitions

    Don't get new boots!

Don't hit the rack before the nightly weather (10pm news not 6pm).

    Don't cook pasta.

    Don't polish your old boots.

    Friday the 13th.

    Power outtages.

3 or 4 day Holiday weekends.

If you don't wash the truck, it will be on the news. Poor public image.

My department and myself thinks it back luck to wash your helmet or gear down before a run is entirely over

I carry a hemostat on my EMS runs, I have no use for it, but I carry it. Seems to be good luck..I also only use yellow pens with black ink to write my reports, again...good luck. For the FF side of things, just the way I put my gear on, and take it off to put it away, same way every time, unless some mutt has gone and screwed with it. I also have a FDNY Rescue 2 shirt, every time I wear it we have a call wihin 24hrs.

Mark440, new boots...yup, I can totally agree with that one. My previous pair had gone five years, and we were fairly busy, now....dead as can be. Same with bunker pants..
