UPPER DARBY, Pa. (5 Mar.) - U.S. Rep. Curt Weldon (R-Pa.), vice chairman of the Homeland Security Committee and founder of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, invites firefighters from the region to attend a workshop on the 2006 U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFGP) on Tuesday, 7 March 2006 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Goshen Fire Company at 1320 Park Avenue in West Chester, Pa.

Entering its sixth year, AFGP has provided more than $5 million to 47 fire companies in Pennsylvania's 7th Congressional District. Congress appropriated, and President Bush signed into law, $655 million in direct assistance to first responders for the 2006 program. The application period for the 2006 AFGP runs between March 6 and April 7, 2006. This will be the only AFGP workshop held in Southeastern Pennsylvania this year. Fire companies interested in applying to AFGP should attend this free informational session and open an application on the AFGP website at www.firegrantsupport.com.

"These grants are pivotal to providing our first responders with the adequate equipment necessary to serve and protect their communities," said Congressman Weldon, former fire chief of Marcus Hook and a key architect of the fire grant program. "I encourage all fire companies to take advantage of this free workshop and apply to this grant program."
