Assistance to Firefighters Grant Application Period Opens March 6

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) today released program guidance for the FY 2006 Assistance to Firefighter Grants (AFG) and announced that it will begin accepting applications beginning March 6, 2006 at 8:00 a.m. eastern standard time. The deadline for receipt of AFG applications is 5:00 p.m. eastern daylight time on April 7, 2006.

AFG applications are available on-line at www.firegrantsupport.com. The website contains useful information on AFG funding priorities and program guidance, as well as a tutorial on applying. The AFG is administered by DHS’ Office of Grants and Training in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration. The program provides funding to fire departments across the country to purchase equipment, vehicles, and training. Funding is also available for non-fire based EMS organizations.

The AFG program is unique because of the level of input that the fire service has in how it is administered. Each fall, representatives of national fire service organizations including NVFC meet to discuss whether changes should be made to the grant criteria for the next fiscal year. Grant applications are reviewed and ranked by panels of unbiased firefighters, and funding is distributed based on those recommendations.
