Default NYC Union Discourages 'Stop, Drop And Roll'

    What are they thinking?
I've done Juvenile Fire Prevention for Pre-K thru 2nd grade for the last 5 years. We've always told our kids:
-not to play with matches, lighters and fire,
-tell an adult if they see someone else playing with fire,
-don't touch matches or lighters - tell an adult if they are within reach,
    -stay away from fire,
-get out of the house if they see fire or hear a smoke alarm,
-don't try to gather pets or toys - just get out,
    -don't go back in
-if clothes catch fire, stop-drop-cover face-roll until fire is out, etc.

Obviously, I agree that emphasis needs to be placed on prevention. I can't imagine that anyone would rely on SD&R as the sole subject of "fire safety" lessons for kids. The whole point of "Fire Prevention" is PREVENTION!! You still need to teach them what to do if the worst happens.

What's next? Stop promoting 911 because it's "more practical" to emphasize proactive measures instead of reactive measures? Maybe Dr. Frank Field needs to stick to being a weatherman.

You didn't read the whole story....
‎"The education of a firefighter and the continued education of a firefighter is what makes "real" firefighters. Continuous skill development is the core of progressive firefighting. We learn by doing and doing it again and again, both on the training ground and the fireground."

Oops...I accidentally posted this before I was finished....Sorry.

"Stop, drop and roll . . . this attacks the realities of what fires look like and how to prevent them . . . and, God forbid, should [children] face that situation, they need to know how to get out and get out quickly," said Uniformed Firefighters Association president Steve Cassidy.

SD&R is a valid response to an emergency. The implication of Steve's statement is that, by teaching SD&R, we are telling kids it's OK to play with fire. "Here's what to do if your clothes catch fire.....now, here are some matches. Have fun!!!".

Teaching prevention is a no-brainer. Not teaching SD&R is reckless, in my opinion.

    Cap'n,
I read all that firehouse.com posted, I think. It was basically a single paragraph. Is there more?

Don't worry. "Huh?" covers too many subjects that could be on here for you to have noticed it.

Not a problem. Glad to see something as important as Fire Prevention is getting double-billed! I used "Huh?" to get folk's attention!
