Members of the Farmers Fire Department floated in chilly lake water on Wednesday for training and certification.

Firefighters Jason Keller, Chris MacFarlane, Brandon Voet and Ryan Glover participated in swift water rescue training in the Licking River below Cave Run Lake's spillway.

Farmers was one of eight fire departments in the area whose firefighters trained during a three-day certification process in the chilly 40- plus degree water, according to Pat Conn, assistant fire chief at Farmers.

Along with Farmers, several members of fire departments from Lexington, Frankfort, Winchester, Richmond, Georgetown, Versailles and Olive Hill were on hand to work for certification.

"The Army Corps of Engineers is working with us to simulate swift water," Conn said. "We do the training here because the water source can be controlled."

Farmers fire department just purchased a swift water boat last year. There has been no swift water team in Rowan County for those who live in areas where flooding is an issue, Conn said.

There are a total of eight special rescuers, six who are swift water techs and two who have been through awareness training.

Tony Glover, Jimmy Hampton, Eric McClellan and Pat Conn are also swift water rescuers.
