Exclamation Two Cops shot, firemen threatened.

(Crown Heights-WABC, March 13, 2006) - Two police officers were shot, but saved by their bulletproof vests, when they responded to a dispute in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn this morning.

Eyewitness News has learned the officers rushed to 834 Halsey Street after firefighters, there to put out a kitchen fire, got into a dispute with a resident, just after 3:15 a.m. The firefighters had been threatened by a resident when they arrived to put out the fire.
According to police when the officers, assigned to the 81st Precinct, arrived, they confronted the suspect, armed with a knife. During a struggle with the suspect, shots were fired, hitting both officers.

One was shot in the abdomen, and the other was hit in the back. Both were hit in their bulletproof vests, and both were both rushed to Kings County Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. At least one officer was bitten during the struggle.

The suspect was taken into custody at the scene and charges against him are pending. Eyewitness News has learned he was described as an emotionally disturbed man.

A weapon was recovered at the scene.

A perfect example of how 99.9% of the NYPD interacts with 99.9% of the FDNY. Great job.

To all the cops out here...WHERE YOUR VEST EVERY DAY!
