What is the correct way to back flush a 2 stage pump? Presently our department hooks up to a hydrant and connects to a large discharge and lets the hydrant pressure flush to pump. Not sure if this correct.

Conyank,
This all depends what you are trying to accomplish. Just to backflush with clean water, the hydrant will be good enough. if you are trying to dislodge something that may be lodged in your impellers than you may need to use another pumper to acheive higher pressure (around 150PSI). With a two stage pump you also need to have the transfer valve in the Volume Position, and you also need to prop up the flap valves in the intakes. Be sure you have ALL intakes open, caps and screens removed.

flush it
We use a couple of different ways to do the backflush. First is too hook up a 2 1/2 hose to that corresponding intake and remove the 5" intake valves and turn the hydrant on. The other is too remove the 5" intake valves open the tank to pump and put it in pump gear and use reverse gear. Items that are really lodged may require the process described by NBC. Good luckand keep it safe.
