    Lightbulb Any Ideas????

Our dispatch center is on 8 hour shifts---5 days on/2 days off....we are short staffed right now and everybody has been getting mandated to work 12 hour shifts atleast 3 times a week if not 4 or 5 times....myself and another employee are getting together to try to come up with ideas on changing our shifts from 8 hour shifts to either 10 or 12 hour shifts...we figure might as well change to those shifts because are basically on them now...the director is shooting down almost every idea we come up with and the union president never answers our emails...What is the next step we do??? Do we send out a petition for everybody to sign or do we go higher up in the union like the regional president???

Is your agency looking to hire more people soon?

    Our dispatch used a 4 shift (A, B, C, D) 42 hrs/wk cycle.

    Day 1...0700-1900

    Day 2...0700-1900

    Day 3...1900-0700

    Day 4...1900-0700

    Then 96 hours off.

Sounds a little crazy, but it's actually not a bad schedule to work. Also, during the 4 days off, overtime shifts are not bad to work because there is usually off-duty time on either side of it.

We used to work a 3on / 3off 12 hour shift and loved it. Unfortunately management changed and now we work either 5/2 or 6/2 and hate it (not to mention blew the budget on overtime within 4 months!). Anyways, 12's are the best.... and if you are serious about going to 12's, you will need to sit down and crunch some numbers. We found we saved a significant amount of money with a 12 hour schedule (I was not part of the change TO that schedule, so I don't have info for you to justify that statement) and that got management to agree to it.

As far as union representation --- find a president who will work for you!

How many dispatchers do you have, and what is the minimum number of dispatchers you have to have on at a time.
