    Default The Golden Crust fire

A massive inferno destroyed the generations-old, family-owned Golden Krust Bakery. Initial reports stated that a fire in a donut machine started the blaze before 5 p.m. Witnesses reported an explosion, possibly from a gas line, shortly after everyone was evacuated. Nobody was reported injured. There were reports of power outages in Cohoes and widespread cable TV outages in southern Saratoga County and the greater Troy area. There was no word from Time Warner Cable on when service would be restored. National Grid expected electricity to return sometime Tuesday night. Giant plumes of smoke could be seen for miles around, and hundreds of city residents athered in the streets and on the bridges to Simmons Island as they looked on.

My sister, who lives just downwind from Cohoes in Waterford, sent me an e-mail about this. Apprently water supply became an issue as well. Mutual aid included Troy, Waterveliet, Green Island and Albany fire departments. The fire apprently burned out of control for about 4 hours.

On a personal note, I have fought fires in small doughnut shops and can't imagine dealing with the fire load present in this large facilty. the amount of flammabales must have created one heck of a fire.
