    Default chevy performance problems

I had the weirdest thing happen today.
    I am driving a 1996 chevy g10 express van
    305cid 5.0L-FI V8

    Here is what took place.
Started normaly, The check engine light was on, pulling out of parking lot, engine starts to surge and loose power, surge and loose power, and each time it lost power the battery lost power also. It then died.

I tried to start it 3 times untill the car completley lost all electrical power.

I went to see if there was a problem with the battery, jiggled the wires alittle bit and when I jiggled the lead running to the alternator alitle(right where the fusable connection is on the lead), power returned to the van.

I then tried to start it 20+ times. It would not start at first but with alittle gas it started, but died. The exhaust smelled pretty rich. Which made me think that the map sensor was not working in the firstplace, which could of caused the engine to die. But why would the electrical connection to the alt also be out of whack. Am i missing something or is this just 2 problems that happened at the same time. It all works now, but I am afraid that somewhere in the middle of no-where it will die. What made me think of the map sensor was that the check engine light was on. And to have it fixed am i going to have to wait untill the light comes on again so they can read the error code, or can they do a visual of the map?

Your loose connection caused power surges to the computer components and either fried them or whacked their settings.

    Time for a DIO

If I am not mistaken DIO Stands for Data Input-Output, basically it means a reprogramming on your vehicles computer. A buddy of mine had this done for about $500.

    Default computer

Codes will be stored in the computer whether acitve or inactive and can be read by a scan tool. With a power surge the vehicles computer probably took a reboot and will have to be driven to get a reset of the parameters.Take it to your favorite garage or Chevy dealer for a read of the codes and or problems it may be experiencing.

    Default Another common problem

I have a 97 Silverado with the 350, but most Chevy's in this era also have problems with the 02 sensor going bad. Did you just put gas in it? A lot of time you will get a check engine light on and the dealer will tell you to retighten the gas cap. These are fairly inexpensive and easy to replace. While it's completely possible it fry your computer, it usually takes a really good hit to do it. If it is the computer, you may be better off looking on ebay or the local junk yard to save some $.

    Good luck.

Check/Tighten the connection at the altenator, or replace its cables.

I was waiting for those comments to start flying, about how Found On Roadside Daily (better known as Ford) is better than Chevy.

Have you added accesory wires to the battery for lighting, or whatever. I have a honda passport and it was doing similar things except that my engine did not die, everything else that is electrical did. But that was a 15 dollar fix at the repair shop, i thought originally the alternator had gone again, just replaced in november. Although the wires of the main battery teminal look tight and the connection to the terminal was tight, the wire that ran all of the computers and control systems apparently had become loose and my car went freakin haywire when it happened.
