Just looking for your opinions, facts, feelings on going with traditional colors of material for turnout gear, PBI Tan/Nomex Yellow VS having it dyed Black.
Any advantages/disadvantages of each?

Turn Out Gear Black or Tan?
-
03-27-2006, 08:19 PM #2
Morning Pride states on their website that the black dye actually protects the PBI fibers from breaking down when exposed to sunlight. Tan is PBI's natural color therefore it is not dyed and does not have the added UV protection.
I can't believe they actually pay me to do this!!!
One friend noted yesterday that a fire officer only carries a flashlight, sometimes prompting grumbling from firefighters who have to lug tools and hoses.
"The old saying is you never know how heavy that flashlight can become," the friend said.

I have Tan PBI... forget the maker. May be Globe. I've heard of some gear makers that have like a back brace in their gear that supports your back. I would love to have that

We just purchased 80 sets of gear off our grant both Morning Pride and Globe told us the same thing. We went with Globe Black PBI.

Tan.
UV breakdown will happen if you leave the gear exposed in the firehouse without uv protection on the windows whatever the colour.
Personally at an MVA or inside a smoke filled structure, I would much rather be standing out like dogs bollocks in TAN thank you.
Middle of the night, smoke filled room, searching for your partner lying amongst the ash and soot, Black or Tan, YOUR CHOICE.Psychiatrists state 1 in 4 people has a mental illness.
Look at three of your friends, if they are ok, your it.

We just started going to Tan Globe, but we used to wear Black Morning Pride. There is no tempature difference when you are outside in the sun. It is just as hot as any other turn out gear. The only negative to the black turnout gear is that when it gets too hot the dye comes out of the coat leaving it sort of reddish tan.

Just about every department around us wears tan. We have always worn black. Our people seem to like it. At large / mutual aid incidents it is very easy to pick out the guys from our department.

We're still using tan. The main advantage to black I see is that it would be easier to keep it appearing clean than the tan. Then again, there are those of us that prefer our turnout gear appearing... experienced.

Been through this discission over and over. Straight up for me, tan is more visible at night. Please spare me the reflective trim remarks, thats stuff, flakes, burns and peels off. I have told my fellow Firefighters, sure wear your blacks (we have a choice in my FD), it will just take me longer to find you.
Note- The stealth fighter plain is black for a reason, it doesnt want to be seen.
I think these may have been posted already. I got a little crazy in a few of them....Bou

Black- discolored means damage.
Tan - discolored means it's dirty harder to notice possible damage.
Both have adavantages as well as disadvantages. Get the gear in the style that you like best, fits you properly and you'll wear it properly and more often.

For us, it came down to price. Tan was cheaper than black as it did not have to be colored.
