A Morgan County man was arrested Thursday for allegedly setting a fire that spread over several acres of Morgan County woodland property owned by his neighbor Billy Conley, according to the Kentucky State Police.

Michael Whitt was charged with the felony offense of willfully setting a fire on land not owned or controlled by self, police reported.

The fire was allegedly set on Conley's property along Devil's Fork Road.

"According to what police have said, Mr. Conley allegedly witnessed Mr. Whitt setting the fire," said Forester Ed McNeal with the Kentucky Division of Forestry in Morehead. "The two properties join in Morgan County."

KSP Detective Shane Barnes was at the scene and arrested Whitt. As of Monday afternoon, Whitt remained in the Rowan County Detention Center on a $10,000 full-cash bond.

Further charges are pending against Whitt and the incident remains under investigation by Barnes and the Kentucky Division of Forestry.
