Default Fire Pension Boards Being Reorganized--About Time

Last year HB 1403 was signed by the governor. this bill reorganizes every
article 4 fire Pension board in the state. Every Article 4 pension board MUST hold an election this month.

In the past the municipality has controlled the majority of the seats on the board. After the reorganization the municipality will pick only 2 members to sit on the board. The fireifghters will elect 2 and the retired guys will pick one.

This is a MAJOR victory for any department that has lost control of their boartd and the money in it.

Start asking questions if there is not an election planed for this month. Must happen on april 17, 2006.

There are pensions in the state that have been mismanaged to the benifit of the municipality and detriment of the firefighters ie. money missing, spending of money on unneeded attorneys, fireifghters not allowed to have a trusted attorney on the board, hiring municipality approaved vendors only......

    FINALLY

    Default Another milestone.

May not look like a big deal to the average professional firefighter but this huge for some places. We do not have a problem where I work. But,there are pension funds out there that are in a constant struggle with their taxing body.
SB 2740 amends the financing section of the Downstate Firefighter Pension Article of the Illinois Pension Code. Currently, the county treasurer forwards the annual fire pension levy to the treasurer of the municipality. The statute then requires the municipality to forward the levy amount to the fire pension board treasurer within 30 business days of receipt.

Several pension boards throughout the State consistently experience delays in receiving that annual pension levy. There is no mechanism in place to notify the pension board when the municipality is in receipt of the levy. This makes enforcement of the requirement to forward the funds to the pension boards within 30 days difficult. Our legislation simply requires the annual fire pension levy to be forwarded from the county treasurer directly to the pension board treasurer

    Default Pension

Anyone know if "deferred pensioners" are allowed a board position or are allowed to vote. Deferred are guys that retired before age 50 so they are not yet collecting a pension. We are being told by the municipality our deferred guys may not participate in the pension board in any way.

    Default Couple of Pension Questions

A Couple of pension questions for you guys in the Downstate Pension fund(that is every one except Chicago).

    1. Does anyone have a retired fireifghter who is not yet age 50 and collecting a pension, and not disabled serving on the current pension board? In other words, do you have a deferred pensioner serving on the board?

    2. I'm thinking that a municipality that appoints the village manager and village attorney to the new board could be causing a conflict of interest since their obvious allegence is to the municipality and not the firefighters pension. Any advise for this situation? Anyone in this situation? Our attorney is not sure if we would have a case.
