In Massachusetts, if you wish to get on a civil service department, you have to take the exam just like everybody else. We do have a few father/son, father/daughter teams. brothers on the same FD, but they all had to pass the exam, the CPAt, the psych and medical exams and place high enough on the list to get appointed.

Your point of sarcasm is noted, however, if you are taking the attitude that you can't get a job because you are poor, female, black, hispanic, live in a crappry run down city or have a daddy who is a firefighter, are you not guilty of the same things you abhor?

You have to rise above it and keep trying!

I think I can get a job, im sure I will get a job in a paid dept, sooner or later. Its just hard over here. It kinda stinks that youve got to pick 1 city and try there, and just wait and hope for that call.

Im not in a rush, I want to finish up getting my electrial license, my best case secenaro is I get hired in 4-5 years from now. So its gonna be long nights of night classes at county college or classes online to get though 30 credits, haha.

Well where I live there is 12 volunterr departments and 1 paid department. So if that tells you anything about paid vs. volunteer. I am a volunteer and loves doing it, I have some certs but on my department half of our members is paid firefighters.

I think what is sad is that people are seriously trying to argue one side or the other on this silly thread.

It tells me that out of thirteen towns, only one cares enough to offer good protection.

as a member of culkin volunteer fire department, i want to say sry to all of the people that have seen this post. i was not a member of the forums untill a few weeks ago, but it was on the ems forums. when i saw this forum and the post that was made by one of our members it upset me. i am currently trying to find out who made the origional post and tell them not to make post's like this anymore. this is not what we, as volunteers, want ppl to think of us. i come from a family of paid firefighters, but joined the vollies just to get a start untill i can go to the academy. again, i am sry. if there is a way to erase this post i would like to see it done.

But the question remains, are they just beach-goers volunteering to bring back the dead horse, or are they paid professional lifeguards?
