    Default Oral board question

Has anyone had any questions about diversity during their oral boards? I am having trouble with this question for my oral board in a couple of weeks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Default Diversity

What about diversity are you have trouble with? There are so many questions they can ask about diversity so you need to be alitte more specific. Questions about diversity in the city/town or in the department?

Diversity could be so many things but, this could be any of the standard questions about how you feel about the ethnic make-up of your community, and the station that you might be placed in. Try to research the City and where the stations are placed, see what the make up is, then ask yourself...Am I Biased in any way. If the answer is yes, then don't bother applying. One of the biggest challenges we face is being able to work, live, and have ownership in the communities we live in.We as Firefighters must be an integral part of the society we live in. Being a Firefighter meens that you must have the integrity to be non-judgemental about others race, creed, religon, and sex. Hope this helps, FW

    Default Cultural Diversity

We often hear Iím stumped on cultural diversity questions.

For most candidates, the oral board is the most difficult part of the hiring process. Cultural diversity questions can be the toughest. Most candidates have trouble in this area. Even those with diverse backgrounds. Itís no as easy for most people to just use common sense.

Many donít realize they have already experienced cultural diversity going to school, in the military and at work. Once they can identify situations that demonstrate that understanding, and put it in a story form as part of their answer to this question in an oral board, is where it starts making a difference.

I donít want to encourage any thing that would make you or the other candidates into ďClonesĒ. This is an area where you have to have a personalized answer.

We use a simple three-step method:

Giving a definition of what cultural diversity is to you
How we have to be as firefighters in a diverse area
How it will be to live in a diverse firehouse.

Then lacing these areas with personalized stories how you have already lived in diverse situations.
