    Question We need your help...

WE need some help. We're looking for information to find out if someone was a winner for the "1997 Firefighter of the Year” for the entire Navy. We are not sure were to look. There is a gentleman who claims this title. Allot of the guys at our department are throwing up the BS flag. Short of calling this guy out, we'd like to see if there is a document or a newspaper headline. This has to be a very prestigious award.

Its weird, the guy has been here for almost a year, and this is the first we've ever heard of this.

Please help us out. Positive or negative, we just need to know if it is possible to believe this guy.

A quick google revealed it's a real award... wasn't able to find a list of recipients though.

If he's been there a year, how did it come out? Was he bragging? Most of the guys who win seem very embarassed by the attention.

One of my SSgts won the DoD FF of the Year for Heroism, 2004. He was back home applying for jobs, and wouldn't even put it on his resume. I had to tell the city's when they called me as one of his references.

I went to the DoD Fire conference in 97. I'll have to see if I have anything in my notes.

Are you sure it was firefighter of the year. Unrated personnel who work in the engineering depts. in the Navy are called Fireman. I know that the Navy gives a service wide Fireman of the Year award. I don't believe the Navy has a firefighting rate. Firefighting in the Navy is done by Damage Controleman who often have a number of other responsabilities such as fixxing holes to keep the ship from sinking and fixing toilets to keep them flushing.

As explained at the website mentioned previously, "For Navy military, any shore/ship/squadron personnel (E-5 and below) engaged in primary firefighting duties are eligible for this award. The Navy’s winners automatically become the Navy’s nominees to compete for the DoD-level Fire Fighter of the Year awards. "

If a DC has the primary duty of acting as a member of a fire /crash/ salvage team, he would be eligible for the award. I have been at the conferences and seen this awarded. As a matter of fact, I have a group photo of last years winner's on my computer, two are sailors-one for FF and one for Fire Officer of the Year.
