    Default Hero's Kin Joins Bravest

April 20, 2006 -- Firefighter John Bellew died last January when he jumped from a burning Bronx building on what has become known as Black Sunday - but his family name will live on at the FDNY now that his nephew has joined the Bravest. Daniel Bellew, 22, was sworn in along with 138 other probationary firefighters during a ceremony at Brooklyn College yesterday. "This job has a lot of family tradition for me, so it was a no-brainer," Bellew told The Post. "But my uncle's death has given it a lot more meaning. It made me want even more to carry on the family name in the department." Bellew, 37, and Curtis Meyran, 46, died in the Jan. 23 plunge, and four of their comrades were seriously injured. Later that day, firefighter Richard Sclafani was killed fighting a separate blaze in Brooklyn. It was the deadliest day for the FDNY since 9/11. The department was criticized for not supplying safety ropes to firefighters. The FDNY has since issued safety ropes to all new trainees. Bellew said his dad, Dan, Sr., who is a retired firefighter, has been "very supportive" of his decision to join the FDNY. "Obviously, it's tough for them because now they have to worry about me. But they understand that it's a very prideful job," he said.
