RES81CUE does make a bit of a point....If your allowed to run lights and or sirens it should be told you by your dept what you can and cant have and what requirements there are to do so...And just a sidenote...askin questions about lights regardless if they are good valid questions be expected to be known as a whacker....It comes with the territory

Hey Barry, if you come in here and try to stir the pot, then expect to get flamed. You'd have better luck selling your vehicle to the fire department, becoming an officer, then leasing it back from them as a command vehicle based on what I've read of the information you've presented.
Just know, I chose my own fate. I drove by the fork in the road and went straight.

    Thread hijack in process?

    For Barry...

Why not contact the state DMV, RMV or whatever agency issues the license plates and get their clarifications?

As far as the accidents an POV's running lights.. there have been many fatalities as a result of speed and recklessness withthe "I have lights, so I can go fast" mentality.

I am a career fire officer who does get called back for coverage for major incidents. In Massachusetts, career firefighters are not allowed to run with emegerncy lights.

I report to my station (4 miles from my home) driving in "normal mode" and get there in plenty of time.

To the guy who takes everything that I say out of context, please quit responding to my thread.

Again, thank you for the message.

To the math wizard (not being a smart alek),

It is a newly paved road, which, in the research conducted by my high school physics class, deserves a speed limit of 55-60 mph. However, this road has a speed limit of 40mph.
Okay.. take this from a forum veteran...

Take some time to grow yourself a hard shell. This forum is a lot like the firehouse... you will get your stones busted at one time or another.

in reference to your remark to the "math wizard"....

The research of your "high school physics class" may be fine and dandy, but the state hires certified civil engineers with bachelor's and master's degrees to design roads and base the speed limits on their calculations.

Shoot, when people do that at my parties, the "executive board" of the party quickly escourts them away.

Back to the OP's subject I would say your POV does NOT count a Authorized Emergency Vehicle, because of a few reasons.

1.) No Audible Signal or Visiual Signal which can be seen 360 Degree
2.) Its not been registered or inspected by the state to become emergency vehicle.
3.) Its a POV and only a POV the dept does not own it

That being said Im sure wig-wags are also illegal on POV's as they are here in NC.
Also i would highly recommend to please drive carefully, obey all traffic laws and use due reguard for public saftey, ( the object is to get to the scene, you cant do much if you never make it there cause you got into a accident)

Barry, with only a month on the department (sorry, a month ACTIVE with the department, whatever distinction that makes), there's about 1,000 things you could and should be studying to make yourself a safe, productive firefighter. Invest some of this energy you are expending in researching Alabama red light laws into some actual training....The payback will be much greater....

Also...What does your chief allow you to run, and what is the accepted standard for your department?

Others in my department have lights, but none of them have sirens.
OK, so you already answered that question. So are you trying to "prove" to your chief that you are entitled to run a siren on your POV? Guess what....if the chief says you can't, you can't, regardless of what Alabama law says. And trying to prove you know better than the chief is a good way to ensure a nice, short career in the fire service.

"I have a dream. It's not a big dream, it's just a little dream. My dream — and I hope you don't find this too crazy — is that I would like the people of this community to feel that if, God forbid, there were a fire, calling the fire department would actually be a wise thing to do. You can't have people, if their houses are burning down, saying, 'Whatever you do, don't call the fire department!' That would be bad."
