Weather Service: Tsunami Could Strike New Zealand, Fiji

    POSTED: 12:31 pm EDT May 3, 2006
    UPDATED: 12:52 pm EDT May 3, 2006

BANGKOK, Thailand -- The U.S. National Weather Service warns that a tsunami could strike Fiji within 30 minutes and New Zealand within 90 minutes.

A magnitude-8.0 earthquake struck early Thursday near the South Pacific nation of Tonga, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

A tsunami warning was issued for Fiji and New Zealand.

The temblor, classified by the USGS as a "great" quake, struck 95 miles south of Neiafu, Tonga, and 1,340 miles north-northeast of Auckland, New Zealand.

The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued the tsunami warning but said it was not known whether the quake generated a potentially deadly giant wave.

Well this part of the warning system works.

I hope this turns out to be nothing major.

    QUAKE AND TSUNAMI NEAR TONGA

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck northern Tonga this morning, creating a local tsunami which may have caused damage.

Tsunami warnings were issued for New Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii, but all warnings have now been cancelled.

The quake hit 170km northeast of the Tongan capital Nuku'alofa at 3.26am (NZT), at a depth of 38km, the New Zealand Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences said. Originally reported as magnitude 8.1, the quake has since been downgraded.

It was not immediately clear what damage was caused by the quake but a report on Sky Television said it was felt in several Tongan islands. A resident told Sky he felt tremors lasting over 30 seconds.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii issued warnings for countries in the region at 3.42am, but said at the time it did not know whether the quake actually generated a tsunami. If it did, it could have hit Fiji at 5.13am and Gisborne at 6.21am.

The Centre cancelled all warnings at 5.36am.

The earthquake struck 150km south of Neiafu island in Tonga's northern Vava'u Group and 2150km northeast of Auckland, the US Geological Service said.

A statement on the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre website at 5.36am said:

"Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated. It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicentre. For those areas - when no major waves are observed for two hours after the estimated time of arrival or damaging waves have not occurred for at least two hours then local authorities can assume the threat is passed.

"Danger to boats and coastal structures can continue for several hours due to rapid currents. as local conditions can cause a wide variation in tsunami wave action the all clear determination must be made by local authorities.

"No tsunami threat exists for other coastal areas in the Pacific although some other areas may experience small sea level changes."

Glad to hear all is well out there. I know that the USGS and Canadian equivilants were both agreeing that no wave action would be seen on the western seaboard, but ya just never know for sure.

Well our house is about 15 foot above the high tide mark on the beach about 150 yards away. We would have been a LITTLE concerned, but the honking big siren across the back fence would possibly have woken us up.

We have had a house contingency plan in place after we discussed the impact of the new years eve tsunami.

Baby, Bug Out box of important docs, Bug Out box of 72 hours food and water, Cat if we have time, and off into the hills we go.

Thank you guys for your concern-my better half works in conjunction with the Motorway Police up here in Auckland, she was on night shift last night, and received notification via Police Comms about this event. Apparently Napier was supposed to be at greatest risk-I have not heard any reports so far.

Like Flyingkiwi we are very close to the sea--but fortunately more elevated than him. Our situation would mean if it flooded we would be safe-but marooned at the end of the Peninsular--our biggest nightmare would be if Rangitoto(dormant volcano) decided to "cough in its rompers"--the panic button would be pushed very strenuously!

And to show you why that would be "The mother of all coughs."

Rangitoto is the gobbing big island in the middle of the map with the red X on it.

About 1 1/2 miles from the nearest part of the city.

It would take a few rolls of double ply to clean that mess up.

As always Flyingkiwi, you do not mince your words and always go to the heart of the matter.
Superchef-I think I may have PM'd photo of Rangitoto to you previously.
The last time that "she" blew was approx 600yrs ago-so unless somebody pokes "her" with a sharp stick and wakes her up-we are A.O.K.

Why do we always seem to refer to these unpredictable things as "she"? Or have I answered my own question? O.T.Y!
