Default Ideas for EMS leadership books

I teach a writing class to participants in an officer development program in Colorado, and afterwards they are asked to write a book report about a leadership book. I have just finished evaluating this year's book reports, and some of the titles that writers spoke highly about include these:

It's Your Ship by Captain D. Michael Abrashoff
First In, Last Out by John Salka
Shackleton's Way by M. Morrell and S. Capparell
The Leadership Challenge by J. Kouzes and B. Posner
The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni

In this course, we have typically recommended that people read books written by people who are not in the fire service, so that readers have a chance to learn best practices from the business community. Salka's book, of course, is the exception to that norm in this list. All of these books focus on principles that would prove useful to EMS leaders.

    Default One more book

Here is one more: "Dealing With People You Can't Stand" by Rick Brinkman and Rick Kirschner. The officer development program writer said, "I chose “Dealing With People You Can’t Stand” for my book report because the subtitle – “How to Bring Out the Best in People at Their Worst” – is an ability tantamount to the success of a company officer in the fire service.

    Leadership by Rudy Giuliani.

It outlines how he managed the City of New York while he was mayor. A lot of what he has to say applies to any size organization.

The One Minute Manager by Kenneth Blanchard.

Quick read, but very informative in terms of managing people.

The National Fire Academy has an EMS curriculum that I'd highly recommend to anyone, especially those in EMS leadership positions.

There are online course that anyone can take free of charge. Use the "Filter Results" button to narrow down courses that you are specifically interested in.

    http://www.nfaonline.dhs.gov/browse/index.shtm

There are also resident, two (2) week courses that are held at the NETC in Emmitsburg, MD. The attached list is narrowed specifically to EMS courses:

Browse the NFA's website. In addition to the above-mentioned items, there are also NFA-sponsored course held regionally and locally.
