Soccer stars to put heat on Bravest

May 18, 2006 -- Challenging a team made up of some of the best former St. John's University women's soccer players may seem a difficult-enough task for the FDNY soccer club. But sprinkle in a few superstars on the female squad - including one of the world's best in Mia Hamm - and it seems clear that New York's Bravest are gluttons for punishment. Hamm and three other Team USA superstars - Joy Fawcett, Julie Foudy and Kristine Lilly - will team with St. John's women's soccer alumni Saturday in a bid to help extinguish the FDNY club in a 1 p.m. exhibition at Belson Stadium. The charity match is a prelude to the smoke-eaters' upcoming trip to Europe for a sort of World Cup tournament for fire department teams, organizers said. "It should be a great day," said Amy Mulligan, a spokeswoman for St. John's University's sports programs. "I know everybody here is really pumped about it." Each of the city's five boroughs are represented on the FDNY team. The fifth member of the U.S. team's famous "Fab Five," Brandi Chastain - remembered best for tearing her jersey off after scoring the goal that gave the team the 1999 World Cup - cannot attend the charity event because she's pregnant, a spokesman for Philips Electronics, the match's sponsor, said. "She's an honorary member of the event," the spokesman added. Courtney Rett, a 2003 second-team All-Big East selection, will play for the Red Storm alumni team, along with Joanna Dawson, Erin Zambelli, Pristina Alford, Claudia Rubino, Theresa Bulman, Erin Henderson and Jen Taylor. The soccer exhibition will help raise money for the Firefighter Sergio G. Villanueva Soccer Foundation, which provides young athletes with scholarships, training and educational opportunities. Villanueva, a native of Argentina, was a member of the FDNY Soccer Club. He died at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11. Tickets for the 1 p.m. match are $12 for adults, $7 for kids, and are available by calling the Red Storm ticket office at (888) 467-8676.
