Just looking into buying some software to map the hydrants within our response area. No other deparment in our area have it yet and i was wondering how it works and which brands are best...

This can be done very easily using basic software such as Delorme's Trip maker or similar (Rand McNally) or as involved as ARCview GIS mapping which lets you place hydrants with flow data (or any data entered) on aerial views of you community. We've done both, both work well and are GPS compatible.

Your water supply company may already have this on disk. Check with them for a copy. May save you running around.
