Question where do I sign up

I am starting my EMT-B training soon. I also put my application at the Fire House to volunteer recently. My questions is what are the " do's and don't" as a probie at your fire house.

I know this is an opened ended question but if anyone would like to take a jab at answering it with a few a sentences of advice or write a novel if you must. I am sure I will have my fair share of mistakes and pranks.

My best friend has done some work with our local. He basically just said to be friendly and be ready to be everyone B****. If you see something that needs to be done such as something needs cleaning then it's time to clean. Complaining isn't an option. Just do what your told and do a good job and they will recognize that your a good hard honest worker and that's what they are looking for in the end. Good, honest, friendly, hard working people. Good luck in the future!

Yep, that's what I hear also. You certainly have to earn your respect.

    Listen more than you speak.

Be genuinely interested in learning how to do your job.

Take all of the in-house training you can.....but please get formal training as well (i.e. FF I & FF II at a minimum).

Try to absorb as much of the probie-bashing as you can....it's not as bad as it used to be anyways :-)

Be respectful, but not a brown-noser......i.e. refer to a Captain as "Captain" or "Sir" unless told otherwise, but don't be the guy who brings him in a coffee and muffin every day either. SIDENOTE: Coffee for the whole shift/department on your first day may be a good idea....they'll know you're brown-nosing your first day, but they will also appreciate it. But don't do it on day 2!

Continually train, drill, and learn.....don't ever be the guy who says he knows it all....because that's the guy that the good firefighters stay the hell away from.

Campfire. This was a post from earlier this year. In my opinion, this is one of the most helpful posts for someone starting out. Good luck to you.
