    Default Question about officers

What qualities/traits do you look for when voting in officers? That is of course if your department votes!

    Hi,

You might want to try a search on this subject. It has been discussed on many occasions.

After you do the search, you will find out that there is an endless possibility for choosing dept. officers. From having the most time on the dept. to having the most experience. (Sometimes it's whoever brings the beer)(no....I'm not joking and no....it's not funny).

Even when voting officers, sometimes you get the most qualified(go figure). Some Dept's. have certain qualifications plus alloted time on the dept.

You always want someone who can lead your members. Someone who is knowledgeable and has had experience in the fire service is also a must. I think that voting can work if you can pick between the best qualified individuals and not just have a popularity contest.

I know I'm just rambling, but what can I say (I'm a rambler)!!!!!
Just someone trying to help! (And by the way....Thanks for YOUR help!)

Aggressive does not have to equal stupid.

I figured it had been covered, but my search results consisted of threads with the words "officers" and "quality" in them, nothing really precise to what I was wondering, so I asked........but thanks for responding.

Our department votes for the Chief only (1 Fire and 1 Rescue), all others are appointed by the Chief and approved by the Board of Directors and the County.

Unfortunatly lately we have only had 1 person at a time willing to put up with the headaches.

What I look for in addition to the obvious qualifications (training, experience, etc.) is leadership and the ability to make a decision. A Chief has to remember that he is not there to be everybody's friend of make everybody happy. He has to have the spine to make the decision that is best for the department and then enforce the decision if necessary.
