Default How to identify which floor is which, Bricelyn Street

I am looking for some help in developing a policy on identify which floor is which. I'm referring to the Pittsburg Bricelyn Street incident where one side of structure appears to be a different height due to topography. I have researched a couple of different books.

From what I have read my belief is if the building isn't already marked such as floor numbers assigned via stairways or elevators then you would identify division 1 as street level on the command post side. Anything below that would be subdivision 1, subdivision 2 (house with a basement and cellar).

    I would appreciate any input.

    First, do a walkaround.

Then maybe tell units operating in the back that the divsions will start with say 1 on their side and on the A side the divisions will start with 2? I'm not sure that the FF's going interior would remember however...and that could lead to problems....I don't really have a good solution.

We have the same situation where I live. Where ever the first in Apparatus is staged is where you would define your levels. If the first in arrives in the rear first where as if from the front it would be know as level 1. How ever if the first in Engine arrives in the front the 1st floor we descirbed as the rear would now be known as sublevel 1. All members are told about this situation and is also written up in am SOP/SOG. HOPE THIS MAKES SENSE.

That would be essential to a smooth and safe operation. That's a really good idea.
