Need help with SOP's
Hello all. I am a fairly new member of a rural volunteer fire/1st responder dept. I have been a member of both paid and volunteer EMS squads and fire depts., in several other states.
We are currently trying to put SOP's into writing and are looking for examples of what to include and what not to include.
If anyone out there would be willing to share their departments SOP's, please email them to me. Feel free to omit you departments name, etc., if you like.
Your help is greatly appreciated.
Be safe.

Go to firefighterclosecalls.com and there will be several there that you can look at, or look up charlottesville fire departments S.O.G.'s. They are excellent, as are the City of Seattles.
STILL STANDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Be sure to establish what are SOPs and what are SOGs.
SOPs are more administrative with no flexibility
SOGs are more for operations that are flexible dependent on the situation.
I have seen this mistake made before, and it creates alot of room for argument and discontent.

DO NOT include any SOP or SOG that will not be enforced.

Mechanicsville, MD has thier excellent SOP's posted on-line: www.mvfd.com

The debate about calling it an SOG or SOP is really not valid.
It doesn't matter what you call them, they should be enforced and if you do not follow them and there is a perceived negative outcome, you better have a good reason.
Thanks

SOG vs. SOP
As long as I can remember(26+ yrs. of service in multiple depts.) I have heard the debate about what we call these documents. I have seen and heard from depts. that have had unfortunate events (apparatus accidents or LOD injuries etc.)that have drawn their documents into ? and the name is nowhere near as important as the content, relevency, updating and use of same in training. Just my humble observation...

Keep them short and simple.
I have read SOPs/SOGs form other FD's, and some of them take 10 pages worth of words to say something that could have been with one page.
Some chiefs write it out SOPs/SOGs as if all of their personnel are cementheads...
