Yesterday, Sunday - June 11, 2006 - The Maryland Fallen Firefighters Memorial was Dedicated. Located in front of the State Treasury Building in Annapolis, the Memorial was a ten year project, from start to Dedication. The earliest LODD listed on the wall is William Carleton of the Junior Fire Company of Frederick, who was killed operating at a Fire in 1840. The most recent, just a few months back, is Chief Paul Thorne of the Forestville Volunteer Fire Department in Prince Georges County. There are three hundred and forty names inscribed on the wall. In the photo below, Glenn Dale's Engine 181 passes by the memorial in a procession of Apparatus representing the Departments that had members among the LODD names on the wall. In a few days, when things quiet down a bit, I'll get a good photo of the memorial and post it here. With the crowd of over 1,000 people attending the dedication, a photo without a lot of people was impossible to get at that time. On behalf of all of us in Maryland's Fire Service, a BIG THANK YOU to Chief Don Mooney of the Landsdowne Volunteer Fire Co. in Baltimore County. Chief Mooney chaired the Committee that worked for ten long years, and raised over $850,000.00, to create this memorial. Don, God Bless You, for making an impossible dream come true for us.

Nice job Chief! I'll try and make it up your way, and to the Memorial after 1 Jul now, I guess. Calendar plate just got filled for the remainder of the month. If you don't do it RIGHT today, when will you have time to do it over? (Hall of Fame basketball player/coach John Wooden)
