Go to your local volunteer fire station. Tell/ask them about becoming a member.
Just DO NOT ask someone while they are actually handling an emergency call!! (I have had that happen to me!)

Lets start with this. Where are you in Illinois? Try posting this on the Illinois forum. People in there are from everywhere in Illinois and I am sure someone can hook you up.

try 1-800-FIRELINE
Try going to NVFC.org and 1800FIRELINE.
Give our thoughts and prayers for our brothers. May we honor them by learning how to keep others safe while we remember their dedication, sacrifices and heroic efforts...

Another way is does your city/township have a yearly festival? If so, go to it and see if your local department has a booth. We just had ours in Belleville,MI and we had a tent on the main drag. We were raffling of a 52" tv and I had a few people come up and ask me about what we do and what they needed to become FF.
Our department is full right now but I gave them info on our mutual aid association website and other departments that might be hiring.

See if your local fire company has a web site. Many do and there may be information on joining and or information on when drills are held. Then just show up on drill night, introduce yourself and the rest will just fall into place.

Being accepted as member depends on the needs of the organization you are applying to. You may just have to show up to meetings and trainings. Some Fire Dept require you to attend rookie school. Being accepted by the members may, unfortunatly, take years.

Have you went down and talked to the Chief? He/She will be the best person to answer all your questions. Good luck
