    Default Passing the Torch

We were toned out for a barn fire yesterday. My son and 1 other firefighter were hanging out at the station (all volunteer no one on any scheduled duty). I was several minutes away from the station planting soybeans. My son and the other firefighter responded in the first due engine and he established command (he was senior firefighter). Our tanker and 3 other firefighters got in route before I got to the station and another firefighter and myself responded in the other engine.
I reported to command when I arrived and he asked me if I wanted to assume command or be safety (I have been Chief for 18 years and he joined up shortly after he turned 18 almost 6 years ago). I told him he looked to be doing a good job and to keep doing what he was doing and I would be safety. He grinned and I told him to button his damn jacket.
He did a good job. Pride and ego were held in check and he didn't hesitate to ask my opinion on a couple of occasions. I had sense enough to keep my mouth shut unless asked something (for the most part). Things went well and he did a good job. On a scale of 1 - 10, I give him a 9.
    Life is good.

I lost my Dad one year ago yesterday. He was a 50 year member of the department and a former Chief. He was also probably the biggest inspiration that I had during my career.

I will never forget the pride that he showed as my brothers and I joined the FD and rose through the ranks. He was most likely concerned as we entered those working fires as he was operating the pump, but he never showed it.

It was a good thing that he saw my brother sworn in as Chief before he died. My brother was the first third-generation Chief in the FD's 109 year history.

Of course, we were never as good as the FF back in his day .

Thanks for posting this. I needed it.
