Last evening I was granted privilage to attend the Doobie Brothers concert at Wolf Trap with two lady friends. The show was great, and so was the music, which brings me to the point on the title.
Firstly I hope to make clear that this is not intended to be offensive to anyone - its only consideration is for a philosophical discussion, perhaps. For those of you who are history and specifically Ancient history buffs, maybe you’ll recognize where this is going.
As I sat on the grass listening to the music, as with any music venue people dance, especially to the really popular songs. I’m not much for getting up and shak’n what I got, (except maybe after more than one or two drinks – more like 5 or 6 LOL) but its always fun to watch and it gave me cause for thinking and reflection. This is where the history part comes in.
Like I pointed out at the beginning I was in company of two lady friends, and they did as most did, and stood up to dance. Since I had not consumed the required amount of liquid courage, I remained sitting on the grass. That’s when it occurred to me. All throughout history folks have made music, drank wine and danced. This is particularly noted during the Classical periods, and case in point is the Greek god, Dionysus – God of Wine. It is purported that women of the Classical world danced in celebration to his name every year (I forget the time of year – summer solstice comes to mind?) in which they would get absolutely pie-eyed. This was followed by later times in history where female drinking and dancing by the moonlight, in the deep forest was frowned upon. These would be the times of the Middle Ages, and even as recently as the 17th and 18th centuries. These were turbulent times in social history, where a person could be declared a witch just because she turned away a mans attentions, or because she practiced holistic medicine. Any reason was good enough in most cases.
For someone to have walked upon a group of ladies drinking wine by fire and moonlight during those times was almost always recipe for disaster to someone.
Now its summer 2006, and I am sitting in a grassy amphitheatre, listening to a band play its heart out to the crowd, and many people – mostly of the female persuasion are up dancing. And of course beer and wine have flowed in some quantity and everyone is having a great time, including yours truly.
I got to think’n (ya that’s a dangerous activity for me - see what it leads to? LOL) how persons of history from the Classical and Middle Ages timeframes, if they could be brought forward from their respective eras have viewed this. That’s when I got the Monty Python image in my head, smiled to myself and nodded my head.
So …. Any takers on a philosophy study?

Sir Bedevere: There are ways of telling whether she is a witch.
Peasant 1: Are there? Oh well, tell us.
Sir Bedevere: Tell me. What do you do with witches?
Peasant 1: Burn them.
Sir Bedevere: And what do you burn, apart from witches?
Peasant 1: More witches.
Peasant 2: Wood.
Sir Bedevere: Good. Now, why do witches burn?
Peasant 3: ...because they're made of... wood?
Sir Bedevere: Good. So how do you tell whether she is made of wood?
Peasant 1: Build a bridge out of her.
Sir Bedevere: But can you not also build bridges out of stone?
Peasant 1: Oh yeah.
Sir Bedevere: Does wood sink in water?
Peasant 1: No, no, it floats!... It floats! Throw her into the pond!
Sir Bedevere: No, no. What else floats in water?
Peasant 1: Bread.
Peasant 2: Apples.
Peasant 3: Very small rocks.
Peasant 1: Cider.
Peasant 2: Gravy.
Peasant 3: Cherries.
Peasant 1: Mud.
Peasant 2: Churches.
Peasant 3: Lead! Lead!
King Arthur: A Duck.
Sir Bedevere: ...Exactly. So, logically...
Peasant 1: If she weighed the same as a duck... she's made of wood.
Sir Bedevere: And therefore...
Peasant 2: ...A witch!

Check out the Maenad's
The more things change, the more things stay the same....In Greek mythology, Maenads were female worshippers of Dionysus, the Greek god of mystery, wine and intoxication, and the Roman god Bacchus. The word literally translates as "raving ones". They were known as wild, insane women who could not be reasoned with. The mysteries of Dionysus inspired the women to ecstatic frenzy; they indulged in copious amounts of violence, bloodletting, sex and self-intoxication and mutilation.

It's amazing to think about how much things have changed over the years, and then think about how much will change over the next couple of thousand years. I would definitely like to catch a glimpse into the year 4,000 just to see what it's like.

**Weighing in on the duck and the "witch" and as the scales qualize:Sir Bedevere: ...Exactly. So, logically...
Peasant 1: If she weighed the same as a duck... she's made of wood.
Sir Bedevere: And therefore...
Peasant 2: ...A witch!
Witch: Oh Bloody he!!.
Peasant 3: Well she turned me into a newt.
Sir Bedevere: A newt?
Peasant 3: Well... I got better....If you don't do it RIGHT today, when will you have time to do it over? (Hall of Fame basketball player/coach John Wooden)

Forget the witches, tell us more about the two lady friends.Last evening I was granted privilage to attend the Doobie Brothers concert at Wolf Trap with two lady friends.
In regards to your original question, I think women from the middle ages would be less impressed with the new ability to drink and dance in the woods then they would the ability to have a job, marry who they wanted, and not die at the age of 24.

Well, what I will say is they are both quite married, so that makes them friends only. And thats just fine with me.
No stress that way. LOL Go out, drink, fall down, go home - no problem.

Actually, women had far more rights in the middle ages than is commonly believed. They ran businesses, attended schools, etc. It wasn't until the Rennaiscance that women began losing the rights they wer gaining through the middle ages.
