Building Collapse - Clinton,MO
CLINTON, Mo. -- Crews undertook a massive rescue effort Monday night when a historic three-story building partially collapsed in downtown Clinton.
Officials said at least 10 people are trapped in the Elks Lodge, which collapsed at about 7:30 p.m. Monday. The building is located in the Historic Square District.
Some of the people trapped have made contact with rescuers and relatives using cell phones, KMBC's Marcus Moore reported.
Paramedics told KMBC that at least eight people have been taken to local hospitals. The extent of injuries wasn't released.
No fatalities have been reported.
It is not clear what caused the collapse.
"This is the worst nightmare for myself and for our community," Mayor Guss Wetzel said. "We have a loving community and these are all our folks, and every life in this community is touched by this."
According to the Elks Lodge Web site, the lodge was scheduled to hold its bimonthly meeting Monday night.
A Clinton resident told KMBC that the Elks were holding an initiation Monday night and about 50 people were on the third floor when it collapsed.
Another group was also meeting in the building Monday night, the resident said.
The Elks members use the second and third floors, and the first floor is a men's clothing store.
The building was recently expanded and restored, its Web site indicated.
KCFD dispatched all Heavy Rescues and an Equipment Trailer to the scene as the all call was put out. It is 76 miles from KC to Clinton.

Mo. Building Collapses, Trapping Some
CLINTON, Mo. (AP) -- A three-story Elks Club building partially collapsed as its members gathered for a dinner, injuring several people and trapping some inside.
Local business owner Barry Glasscock said dozens of people were on the second floor of the building in this west-central Missouri town when the third floor collapsed. At least one person had not been accounted for, he said, but that could not immediately be confirmed.
Witnesses said rescuers had made contact by cell phone with at least eight of nine people who were trapped, WDAF-TV reported.
Club members had gathered for dinner and were preparing to initiate new members at a meeting that was to start at 8 p.m. when the collapse occurred around 7:30 p.m.
Glasscock said hundreds of people gathered on the square immediately after the collapse.
"People know a lot of these people," he told WDAF-TV in Kansas City. "It's a smaller town so they know the people who are missing or trapped, or coming downtown to see if their friends that might have been up there are out and OK."
Local law enforcement officials were not immediately available for comment.
Diane Hannah, executive director of Clinton Main Street, said the building is a historic brick structure that's about 100 years old and houses a retail store on the first floor.
