Well, that oughta do a pretty good job of scaring off the good people.Hello All!! Are applications should be coming out in the next couple of weeks, The list is up in the first week of August. There is no more residency rule. You do not have to be a medic or emt. They are competely seperate from us. We don't even eat with them..We are a very strong union department IAFF #717 .. The last list had no collage not sure about this one.
Our Stats
63 union Firemen,,28 medics(Metro ambo) 9 chiefs 2 secretaries and 5 dispatchers
Our city is 5 square miles boardered by Chicago's west side on three side's
and berwyn on the west. Last year we did about 14,000 calls. Around 71 structure fires (alley garage or bigger).
We have 3 engines,, 2 trucks (1 tiller) 4 ALS ambo,s and a lot of other fd vehicles.
Cicero has 93,000 residents.
Our starting pay is $ 51,000. We get great raises after that . After 5 years your at about 65,000$ . But we are without a contract and are in negotiations now. We work 1 on 2 off kelly every 8th day.
This is a great place to work. But I will be straight forword. If you are looking for a department that trains everyday, and you have to look good in your pressed uniform and that is buy the book, do not even apply, I am not talking like a AZZHOLE or a hard guy but that is how it is here. We are very traditional if you know what I mean. We had in the last of years some guys come from other suburban department and it was a culture shock, Just remember what happens in the firehouse stays in the fire house Also we have no women here (they would not like the porn).
If you guys need any thing else leave a message

Cicero test
Someone told me about this thread and I thought I should reply. Whoever wrote this is on target but they forgot about our strong Union History (on our web site). I am the President of the Union and always willing to help Union Brothers and future Union Brothers and Sisters. For more information check out our web site at www.ciceroiaff717.com. Any questions click on the executive board link and you can send me a e-mail. Also we are selling shirts and fund raising items. Shoot us a e-mail if interested.

One of the good guys
For those of you that are interested in such things, Eric, the President of the Cicero Firefighters is someone to look up to. Having spoken to him and knowing about the trials he and his family were put through for doing the RIGHT THING, he has earned the deep respect of myself and many other local union officers here in Illinois.

cicero test
I assume the applications will be available at the Cicero Town Hall. The current eligibility list will expires in August. I have been checking to see when they will be handing out applications, but they are not very forecoming with me on the exact date. I will keep checking and as soon as I know something I will post it on our web site.
As for the hiring process with each new town goverment things change a little. The test prior to the last one required an associates degree. The last test required a high school diploma. However the process usually proceeds as following.
1. Turn application in.
2. Go to orientation.
3. Written test.
4. If you pass written move on to physical agility.
5. If you pass physical agility move on to psychological.
6. If you pass psychological move on to background and drug test.
7. If you pass the above you are put on a eligibility list numerically based on final cumulative score.
I am not possitive but this is usually the general order of the process, but as soon as I am sure I will post it on our site. I update it often with new pictures and info.
I hope this helps all interested. Being a Firefighter is the greatest job in the world, nothing else as rewarding and interesting.Last edited by ekhaber; 07-21-2006 at 10:03 PM.
