The Last Men Out

I am just about finished with this book and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone else? Or maybe someone has another book they could suggest. I've also read Report from Ground Zero.

Not long after I joined my old volunteer department,a relative gave me a copy of "Last Man Down"about Chief Picciotto(sp?)'s being the highest ranking FDNY survivor of Sept 11.Excellent book.
I just hope there aren't too many people trying to claim to have been there like some people did in the 80s when being a Viet nam vet got to be popular to talk about.

I thought "Bagpipe Brothers - The FDNY Band's True Story of Tragedy, Mourning, and Recovery" by Kerry Sheridan was well written.

I read the Last Men Out, thought it was really good. Richie Evers sounds like a pretty tough guy, I liked the parts about him.

My volunteer chief read this book (he loved it) and all of the sudden he started acting like an a*****e and not caring what the members needed.

He is a self-serving collaborationist of the highest order. He is to such a degree, a quisling, that from henseforth, any use of the name Benedict Arnold shall be supplanted with Tom "the CanMan" VonEssen.

It is not a book about FDNY, but I just finished reading Pride and Ownership by Rick Lasky. I thought that it was pretty good. Isn't Last Men Out about Rescue 2 or am I thinking about another book?

I've been reading Report From Ground Zero by Dennis Smith and have teared up a couple of times.

I just finished "3000 Degrees" and "Firehouse" about the Worchestor Ma cold storage fire and an engine/truck house in NYC that lost both crews except for one guy on Sept 11.
Those will get the eye pumps going no matter how hard your heart is.

Dennis Smith is fool, I hope you did not buy his book. A pure opportunist like Tom Suck it up Von Essen. Downey's book was a great one, really felt like you were in the clown wagon with them!

I just finished "Pride and Ownership" by Chief Lasky. It's a great book that is easy to read. I'm starting on "First In, Last Out" right now.

I second the reccomendation for 3000 Degrees by Sean Flynn. Very good.

I have also read Report from Engine Company 82, and just started Report from Ground Zero both by Dennis Smith, and worth the read.

I read 3000 Degrees when it was being passed around by CR. Subsequently bought a copy for myself. Also have and read Caroline Paul's "Fighting Fire" about being a female joining the SSFD. {and yes, for those who don't know - she is Alexandra Paul's TWIN sister....}

I thought that she was the prettier sister myself but to each his own. Even if she is a vegetarian.

The other night,I read"102 Minutes"about the people who had to get out of the buildings on Sept 11,and what they knew of those that couldn't make it.
Ordinarily,I have an abject fear of heights,which makes me happier to hear"Horizontal ventilation this time.",as opposed to"Open that roof!".
Just reading that book made me start feeling the way I do when on a rooftop:not wanting to go anywhere NEAR the edge and wanting to get down just as soon as possible.
I've read some of the magazines that popped up after the attacks that told about the people that worked to get their coworkers out and how some people heard the PA announcements and went back into the buildings.
I think I would have been in total agreement with one Viet Nam vet's pronouncement "Bugger that!We are leaving this place!"
Anyway,it's a good read.

This book is due for release in a month or two.I don't know too much about the authors, but it looks like a great reference.
