I just bought an arrow sign, (SAMS 200.00 includes letters) and have shamelessly stolen one saying off of the Firehouse forums to put on it,
Now Hiring
No pay, Bad hours
KEWL HAT
(Changed just a bit because of the letters we had)
I am looking for more similiar sayings, as I don't want the
thing to get stale.
Any ideas? I have from other threads,
PROTECT YOUR DREAMS........VOLUNTEER
MEMBERS NEEDED - STOP IN WEDNESDAY EVENINGS 7PM
OR CALL {xxx} xxx-xxxx
IF YOU COME TO OUR MEETINGS, WE'LL COME TO YOUR FIRE!
(To be honest, not a big fan of this one)
Thanks

My volunteer dept has a member who is in the sign business. He has made several banners for us. We display them in the front of the station similar to what you are going to do except we don't have the lights. (We are very poor)
We have the following banners:
Volunteers Needed Apply Inside
Change Your Clock Change Your Battery
Free Blood Pressure Checks
Outdoor Burn Ban May 1 - Oct 1
He is making 1-2 banners for us every year. Our goal is like yours to have something different displayed to get our citizens attention!
Great Post

Station message signage
Right now the fire deptments that I'm with aren't allowed to put out signs in front of the station, even for special events at the station. My dad is on a volunteer department and always puttering around with woodworking. He made a four by eight foot double sided unlighted display sign that the letters can be changed on for his station for about a hundred dollars, and got the letters donated by a local business who got rid of their old display sign in front of that business. The sign also fire logos that he cut out and painted to add catchiness to the sign that attach to it. He so far has smokey bear, a ff, and fall scene of leaves/color tour time. They really add to the messages he puts out there in front of the station.
"Remember that fire safety starts with you. The easiest fire for a department to put out is the one that got prevented."

"Volnteer. We need U."
Cheesy I know... all I could think of right now.
**Edit: A couple more I came across (these I did not make up!!):
"Our family helping yours -- whatever it takes."
From the NVFC: "What if no one answered the call?"
"Take action... Volunteer."
"Not Volunteering is hazardous to your health!"
"What have you done for your community today?"
"Still making house calls since ______" (enter founding date of department in the blank)Last edited by FTMPTB15; 09-23-2006 at 02:59 PM. Reason: found some others

Good ideas for slogans. We have used a lighted outdoor sign for several years, but without the results I had hoped for. I'm gonna try to be a little shameless too and grab some of your slogans as well. We have gotten some response from 2 color banners we had printed up with the flag in the background and the previously mentioned "Protect Your Dreams... Volunteer" along with the dept name and number. I like the banners because we put them on different fences, buildings and even on the reserve apparatus parked at different locations. Hope other clever recruiters will share their slogans with us too.

Volunteer..................the experience of a lifetime.Just because it's called a throw bag, doesn't mean you throw the whole bag... you're supposed to hold onto the rope.

God created the fire service to train the faithful. One cannot go against the word of god. ( ok, way over the top, but it amused me. )

The township forced us to take our banners down after I put them up outside the station. They have an ordinance that says other then "Grand opening", the only other signs allowed are the 18x24 yard signs and those can only be put up 30-days prior to an event. Quite a pain in the arse since our station doesn't have a fixed lit sign to use for recruitment. The problem with yard-signs is that this time of year they are everywhere and ours get lost in the "noise". In addition they're small and unreadable unless the car is stopped at the intersection.
For slogans we're using:
"What did you do last night.. Volunteer today"
"Volunteers wanted"
a nearby department has
"Neighbors helping Neighbors, Volunteer today"-or something similar.

These are good ideas, I think I might try to swing the sign out front. Depends on codes and cost.
How about "Help us, Help your neighbor"
