    Post New Members Age?

    What age range can new volunteers be when looking to join your fire department!....Please give the us some information 18 - 45 or ?

    Junior Members: 14 - 17

    Regular Members: 18 - ?

    It depends on their physical fitness and also on what they will actually be doing on the department.

    In our part of Arkansas, we had kids that looked teens to a 63 year old grandma. A couple of our members are in there 70's .

    At 52, I was by far the oldest rookie in my NPQ class. The newest member of our volunteer department to be hired as a career firefighter in a nearby town is still a year short of his 21st birthday. So, 18 to whatever.

    14-16 Explorer. 16-18 Junior. 18+ FF. The State of NJ will officially only accept members up to the age of 45. You can still be in a Department, but you will not get State Association membership.

    When I was a vollie in Maryland, the company I was with started juniors at 16, with the proviso that they did NOT do interior work. At 18 they applied to become seniors and then could perform internal attack work. With the department I'm with now in Virginia, the minimum age is 18 due to liability issues. Our oldest member who still runs as a vollie is 67!

    So any vol. department in New Jersey must accept new members over the age of ( 45 ) if they pass a background test & physical from a doctor ?

    "Must" is a big word. Not sure if you can legally decline a person membership based on age, but haven't researched it. You might be able to since the state won't but not sure.

    A friend of mine is looking to join a VOL department in Woodbridge twp, N.J. and is getting the run around from there fire officers, because he is 47yrs old and they are saying that there cut off age for new people is ( 45 ). Do you know where we can find out some information from the state of N.J. ?

    Gee and I thought we had problems.
    A friend of mine transferred in as a vol at 70 years of age. Tough as old boot leather.
    A lifetime of experience and no longer working so always available except when he was getting his triple bypass. Fitter than most 30 year olds.
    We live in a world of an aging population and an increasing skills shortage.

    The Australian Military Forces now hire up to 50 years of age and are considering lifting this age and relaxing health requirements to get more recruits.

    If you only want young recruits whether vol or perm then be prepared to accept a high turnover of personnel as these people are in demand.

    This year our dept. had a 16 year old and a 64 year old complete FF 1 and become certified

    Minimum age 16, no maximum

    Duties, responsibilities and privileges of under 18 are heavily restricted by our bylaws and SOPs. We don't call them "Junior FF" though, they are technically and by NYS law considered full members of the dept.

    Except from our bylaws:
    ARTICLE IX

    Description of Members

    Section 1. Active Member. Any person 16 years old or over shall be eligible for active membership. Any active member moving out of the fire district may retain his/her active status if he/she can comply with existing state and town laws. All active members shall be required to adhere to the training requirements as outlined in the Training Requirements section of the Standard Operating Procedures of the Fire Company. Active members under the age of 18 shall also adhere to the additional restrictions and requirements as outlined in the "Members Under the Age of 18" section of the Standard Operating Procedures of the Fire Company.
    SOP:
    APPLICATION FOR MEMBERSHIP BY PERSONS UNDER THE AGE OF 18

    1. Persons under the age of 18 seeking membership shall be required to submit proof of permanent legal residence within the Fire District. A report card showing this address shall be acceptable proof.

    2. Persons under the age of 18 seeking membership shall be required to complete both the regular membership application as well as the application insert for persons under the age of 18. They shall provide copies of their 2 most recent report cards. A parents or legal guardian’s signature must be affixed to the application insert. No application shall be accepted without such consent.

    3. There shall be a maximum of 10 members under the age of 18 in the Fire Company at any given time.

    GUIDELINES FOR MEMBERS UNDER THE AGE OF 18

    1. Except as otherwise provided, all other provisions of the Bylaws and SOPs of the Fire Company shall also apply to members under the age of 18 (herein referred to as “they”).

    2. They shall not be permitted at any time to operate any apparatus, including driving, pumping and operation of aerial apparatus, or operate any mechanized, motorized, hydraulic, pneumatic or power equipment such as saws, extrication equipment, fans, air tools, etc.

    3. They shall be subject to a curfew of 10:00 PM on weekdays when school is in session and 12 Midnight on weekends, holidays, vacations or any other time when school is not in session. Said curfew shall cease at 5:00 AM. During this curfew, they shall not be permitted on Fire Company or District property, they shall not respond to alarms or engage in any other activities with the Fire Company. In the case that they are operating at an alarm or participating in any activity when the curfew approaches, it shall be the discretion of the Incident Commander or Member in Charge to cease their participation. The preferred course of action will be to relieve them of duty and, if necessary, provide transportation for them to comply with the curfew.

    4. They shall not leave school grounds or other academic activities to respond to any alarms or participate in any activities with the Fire Company. In the case that they are operating at an alarm or participating in any activity when school time approaches, the Incident Commander or Member in Charge shall immediately relieve them of duty and, if necessary, provide transportation for them to comply with this rule.

    5. They shall not be allowed on Fire Company or District property when school is in session.

    6. They shall not be allowed on Fire Company or District property without the permission and supervision of a member over 18 years old. They shall be required to leave the property when the member over 18 leaves.

    7. They may not have any guests on Fire Company or District property.

    8. At no time whatsoever shall they consume any beverages containing alcohol, in any quantity no matter how minute.

    9. They shall be restricted from using tobacco products (including cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco) unless they provide a letter of permission from their parent or guardian.

    10. They shall be required to provide copies of their report cards each quarter. They must, at the least, maintain their GPA, but it is preferred that they strive to improve their GPA while members of the Fire Company. Their academic performance will be constantly monitored. If at any time it is the judgment of the Fire Company that their academic performance is deteriorating due to membership in this Fire Company, they will be subject to suspension. They will not be allowed to be on Fire Company or District property, respond to alarms or participate in any other activities until they provide proof that their academic performance has markedly improved.

    11. They shall complete the probationary training requirements as outlined in the Training Requirements SOP.

    12. They shall attend all probationary training.

    13. They shall be on probation until at least such time as they reach their 18th birthday. Assuming all other requirements are met for probation, as outlined in the Bylaws and SOPs of the Fire Company, the following provisions shall apply. If they have served a full year in the Fire Company upon reaching their 18th birthday, they will be accepted as an active member in good standing at the Fire Company meeting immediately following their birthday. If they have not yet served a full year upon reaching their 18th birthday, they shall be credited time served towards the 1 year probation requirement, and they only need complete the balance of the year to be accepted as an active member in good standing at the Fire Company meeting immediately following the completion of a full year served.

    14. They shall not be permitted to respond out of the district for mutual aid calls. The only exceptions shall be during a full response mutual aid or automatic mutual aid (4 minute rule, dept out of service).

    15. They shall not be permitted to respond to the scene of any alarm in any method other than aboard the responding fire apparatus. They will respond directly to the closest Fire Station.

    16. They shall not be permitted to display a blue light at any time.

    Most of the time the first FF to arrive at the station is 79.He lives close by and will have the doors up and the trucks running when the rest show up.He also drives and fights fire.There was a time when our day time Ff's were all over 65 and sometimes still are.Some depts. have alot to choose from and can be real picky.There were times when we had to just find someone to go with us.Those days are long gone thank God.

    I don't really see one at all. I firmly believe the decision to take in a member should be based on the potential member's fitness level and health (as determined by a qualified physician during an examination specifically addressing a high stress job like firefighting), their moral character (as determined by a background check and character references) and by their desire to join for good reasons. Also, there are plenty of administrative and non-interior jobs that need to be done in a volunteer company that can be filled by someone who might not be healthy or fit enough for interior work. Our dept has a member with a partial disability who so happens to be one of the most active guys around and is a tremendous assest both on the fireground as an Accountability Officer as well as off it as a company Trustee and Fire Prevention Officer.

    Age means nothing. We had a 16 year old kid join just over a month ago who was a very active and fit athlete and passed his dept physical with flying colors. He died in his sleep a few weeks ago of an apparent undetected heart condition. While obviously tragic, it illustrates the sobering reality that even those we consider the most youthful and fit among us can succumb to injury or disease at any time.

    Exactly my point Chauffer.

    To exclude folks over the age of 45 is excluding a HUGE pool of talent, life and work experiences. The physical condition of the person shoul be the determining factor. The skills and knowledge base that someone over 45 brings to the table is enormous. I would be interested in seeing the history as to why this law was passed in NJ and find out the motivation(s) behind it.

    In are county you must be 18 to join. There is no cap on age, but there has been talk of making firefighters over 50 to get a physical and eye exam. Some vfd's have all ready started this. My vfd is doing whatever we can to get younger firefighters onboard. There are only 5 out of 35 members on are vfd that are under 30.

    I'm not sure why the State of NJ picked 45 as it's max age, although I believe it had something to do with unions and paid FF's and mandatory retirement ages. The State Association is for paid/poc/volunteer so it's rules apply to all FF's. I know it has not stopped anyone from becoming a member of a vol fd, it just stops them from being a member of the State Association...(which most people don't really care about anyways).

    There is no law in NJ that says you can't be over age ## and join a vol fd.
