    Default Who doesn't have a "Q"?

After reading an article on the frontpage of Firehouse here I had to wonder, who doesn't have a Federal Q siren on their firetrucks? I can understand not having the mechanical siren on attacks and brush's, but the big pieces should have it for sure. Every department I've been too has had a Federal Q on the bumper of their engines and trucks.

So...who doesn't have one? And if you know why, why?

BTW, I'm all for having an electronic siren too, but it shouldn't be the primary on an engine.

As much as I like them, as does everybody else, we do not have them. Why, I dunno. I think it's "one of those things" that are easy to cut out of the spec's to save a dime. I'll go hide in shame now

we have them on all our trucks except our heavy brush/engine (cross between a firetruck and a brush truck)

    First off good one Cap

Now back to the original question. All apparatus with the exception of staff vehicles have them along with electronics. We do have one unit with an electronic Q, it just is not the same

2 of our engines have a Q plus an electric and air horns. 1 engine, the rescue, the ambo and the tanker all have electric sirens and air horns, no Q. The brush truck, suburban, and van only have electric and the boat dosent have any.

    Default split

our first response engine has one and an electronic. Our newest unit, a 1500/4000 tanker also does, but it rareley ever runs so its a bit of a waste. Our ladde which is also first due, does not have a q, but on the upside has an electronic and a bell, which I think works.

All of our engines and ladder have Q's, electronics, and air horns. My two engines have bells too (but no whistles).

    A BELL!

Now that's classy! I wish we still had bells on our units!

fireman4949, the bells are old. They were new many years ago and as we replace a truck, the bell is removed and installed on the new truck. At least one is from early 1940's.

still with rotaotrs, odd. how big do you think those cabs are? I have also never seen a crash truck that a) does not do ARFF, and b) has a q.
even the ambulance, which is custom chassied has dual mechanicals.

Been to FDMH many times. It is a very unique department with a twist of both tradtion and modern technology. I've know the chief, Chuck Himsel, for a long time. He has had some serious health problems but is making a great recovery now. Black fire trucks with duel "Q's", leather helmets and chrome ceiling tile runners in the meeting room. Very cool.

Great town, great department. You should visit sometime.

Maybe FDMH12, (sorry, don't remember the name exactly) who is from FDMH can comment further.

Not a chance. The members want one, the board won't let us have one.
