Pop-up urinals for Victoria?
CanWest News Service; Victoria Times Colonist Published: Wednesday, October 04, 2006
VICTORIA - Victoria city council is considering pop-up urinals in Bastion Square to end "problematic" public urination.
A report by city staff recommends trying out the European-designed urinals, which hydraulically rise out of the ground in the evening when bars are most active, and then lower under ground during the day, making them invisible to shoppers and merchants.
The Urilift toilets are one of 10 recommended strategies to deal with the shortage of public washrooms and associated public urination in the downtown core. The report also suggests working with bar owners on an advertising campaign perhaps printed on drink coasters reminding people to not urinate in public.
The cylindrical units, which have three urinals, cost $75,000. Victoria would be the first city in North America to have them, although Vancouver, Toronto and Seattle have installed larger automated public toilets at a cost of $150,000 to $225,000.
But before Victoria buys the hydraulic urinals, it plans to put up temporary urinals in Bastion Square to test if they would reduce the problem. The city also will consult with area merchants.
Council will consider the proposal later this week.
