    Lightbulb Withdrew once, Eligible?

    So I have a question...
I was in fire academy once before, however, I withdrew because I got a rash from the nomex hood. I saw my doctor and talked to the emt instructor, neither could offer a solution. I got discourage and 2nd thoughts and I withdrew. Since then I've given it lots of thought and have talked to my boss who is a retired ff, and have come up with a solution to this problem.

My question now is... Will I be able to get a job with completed ff 1/2, hazmat, emt-b, even with that previous withdrawal on my transcript? Do they even look at transcripts?

    Thanks much,
    I really appreciate it.

    Pancho.

Do you have medical certificates for the rash cause, or at least that it was nasty enough to withdraw from the academy?

Trust me on this one point.

You will get a damn site worse than nappy rash doing this job. Giving up 1/2 way through doesn't help the chances of surviving the course, let alone the job.

Well originally the rash lasted 3 days then went away.. 2nd time it lasted 2 weeks.. not sure what it was.. but I'm gonna try a hood thats not nomex.. I figured between fire academy and volunteer, the withdrawal shouldnt prevent me from getting a job, at least I should hope not..

    So whatcha think?
    Thanks much,
    Tim

    Pancho.

How long was it from the first wearing to the second wearing?

How long did it take for the rash to go away?

How long from when it went to the third wearing that bought it back?

Was it your personal "hood" or shared?

What aftershave or other pussy face lotions were you using? (sorry, it has to be asked it may not be "hood" related")

Is there not Nomex in any of the other gear you wear?

I dont wear any other face lotions or anything like that.. first time it took 3 days to go away 2nd time was 2 weeks and it made my skin real red and dry starting flaking/peeling etc.. My boss suggested that it is possibly the nomex. My skin is real sensitive, but I got a new doctor and I'm bound to find a way around this rash thing.. So yae.. I'm just hoping that withdrawing the first time doesn't screw my chances of getting a job.

    thanks,
    Tim

Well, I contacted the academy and talked to them about it. They said Oh no! that wont affect you at all.. If they look at it they'll see you withdrew on your own, but came back to complete it. He said they don't even look at transcripts unless I provide them though.. Anyways, I'm going to do some ride alongs and see about getting on a volunteer department and go from there.
    Thanks for the replies,

I don't know what the nomex hood has to do with it, but sounds like it may have been dirty and maybe you had shaved close before wearing it in an hostile area. If you shave too close and wear something that may rub you face like a hood sometimes does, it may CAUSE PROBLEMS.

Really can't see anything else other than what I have said.

This is interesting. One of the probies at my dept has asked for alternatives to gear made with Nomex. He has developed a rash on his hands from his gloves but curiously none to the head or neck area.

    Hmmm thats very interesting.
I havent had any problems anywhere else except on my face. And what you said Jonnee makes sense, because we are required to shave daily in academy. I would often shave 30 mins before pt. Anyways I'm currently enrolling for fire academy this spring so hopefully everything will go well. I don't necesarily have the money for it, but I'm thinking about getting a stafford loan.
Also one of the instructors did recommend buying my own hood and I was thinking about buying one of the carbon hoods. I'm not sure wether I should wait and see if I have another reaction or just go ahead and buy it.
Thanks for the replies and stay safe,
    Tim

I would just suggest either a PBI hood, or a Black Carbonex hood.

Where can I find these types of hoods and how much do they cost?
I think I should wait untill class starts and see if I have another reaction, then if I do look into buying another hood.

    Thanks,
    Tim
