Richmond VA taking applications
Only applicants selected for an interview will receive a response. Please call the HR Solutions Center at (804-646-5660) for further information.
The City of Richmond, Virginia’s Department of Fire and Emergency Services seeks qualified individuals to join the organization as Career Firefighters. Selected candidates will effectively respond to fire related and medical emergency situations. Duties include responding to fires, alarms and explosions; fire suppression; managing fire apparatus and equipment; ventilating buildings; removing persons from danger; administering emergency medical services and performing fire prevention activities.
The hiring process is lengthy and involves two phases. Phase one includes a general intelligence written test and a structured oral exam (interview). Based on this first phase, an eligibility list is created. The second phase takes this eligibility list and, based on departmental vacancies, calls candidates in order of the list to conduct a second interview. If an offer of employment is made, it is contingent, based on successfully completing the following: a background check, physical agility test, a physical and psychological review and a drug screening. Candidates finally selected will attend an 18-week Fire Training Academy.
Minimum requirements include: completion of High school or GED, a valid Virginia driver’s license and the applicant must be at least 18 years of age and willing to work variable shifts. The most successful candidates will be cooperative, flexible, able and willing to work as a team member, self-motivated and able to deal with critically injured/ill people, able to maintain control and perform complex tasks under life threatening conditions. Starting recruit salary is $36,500. Submit a City of Richmond employment application no later than 5:00 PM, Friday, December 29, 2006 to either of the addresses listed below.
