TV is saying small multi-engine airplane. The on-screen images are damned spooky.

Default According to Carolinas Fire Page:

Car 13 is reporting a helicopter has crashed into a high rise building, halfway up the building. There is apparently a 2nd alarm high rise assignment on scene. The government has (already) put out a statement declaring that this is not an act of terrorism.

Update: This is now a 3rd alarm assignment, heavy fire conditions are reported on the 40-43 floors of a 50 story apartment building. Fatalities (civilians) are being reported, NYPD ESU teams are responding to the scene.

Good luck to all of the FDNY Brothers, especially those in Manhattan.

Plane crashes into East Side building

    amNY.com

    October 11, 2006, 3:22 PM EDT

A aircraft has crashed into a residential building on the Upper East Side of the city, officials said.

Fire Department spokeswoman Emily Rahimi said an aircraft struck the 20th floor of the building on East 72nd Street and York Avenue. Witnesses said the crash caused a loud noise, and burning and falling debris was seen. Flames were seen shooting out of the windows.

"There's huge pieces of debris falling," said one witness who refused to give her full name. "There's so much falling now, I've got to get away."

Aerial views of the crash site showed a thick cloud of smoke spreading over the East Side. A fuel spill from the plane is causing fire on the ground.

It was not immediately known if it was terrorism. NORAD said it was not tracking the aircraft, however the FBI is sending two squads from joint terrorism forces.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it was too early to determine what type of aircraft was involved, or what might have caused the crash in the middle of a hazy October afternoon.

Witness Sarah Steiner, who lives one block away, told CNN that "The fire was raging out of two windows on approximately the 30th floor. ... They are evacuating the building."

The building, located at 524 E. 72nd Street, has been identified as the Bel Aire building. The 50-story condominium tower was built in 1986 and is located nearby Sotheby's Auction House. It has 183 apartments, many of which sell for more than $1 million.

Firetrucks are on the scene and at least two dozen firefighters have entered the building, according to witnesses.

There have been no reports of injuries and no airports are reporting planes missing, according to television reports.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Been checking around and I've found most stories do not id the a/c type, other than to be a "small a/c". One that suggested it might have been a multi-engine small a/c and another that hinted a possible helicopter.

Aircraft crashes into East Side building

    amNewYork and Newsday

    October 11, 2006, 3:47 PM EDT

An aircraft crashed into a high-rise residential building on the Upper East Side shortly before 3 p.m., officials said, damaging at least 10 apartments.

Televised reports said at least two people have been killed and authorities on the scene said that the craft was either a small plane or helicopter.

Christine Monaco, a New York spokeswoman for FBI, said there was no indication of terrorism, but that officials "have been sent to the scene as a routine." FAA spokesman Jim Peters said all three New York City-area airports were operating normally.

"The initial indication is that there is a terrible accident," said Department of Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke.

Fire Department spokeswoman Emily Rahimi said an aircraft struck the 20th floor of the building on East 72nd Street and York Avenue. Flames could be seen shooting from windows on two upper floors of the 50-story building, near the East River.

Burning debris fell from the tower, and a column of gray smoke rose over the city.

"There's huge pieces of debris falling," said one witness who refused to give her full name. "There's so much falling now, I've got to get away."

New York City Police said there was no indication from defense department officials that any suspicious aircraft were in the area. However, as a precautionary measure, NORAD has ordered fighter aircraft to patrol U.S. cities.

Witness Sarah Steiner, who lives one block away, told CNN that "The fire was raging out of two windows on approximately the 30th floor. ... They are evacuating the building."

"I saw a helicopter in flames bounce off the building. It was in flames. It felt like a rocket ... All of a sudden, it fell," said Doris Light.

"It was a shock, I'm still shaking from it," she said. "I just saw a ball of flame and out of that ball of flame was a ... a... I'm just so scared."

Prior to the crash, some witnesses said the craft was flying erratically.

The building, located at 524 E. 72nd Street, has been identified as the Bel Aire building. The 50-story condominium tower was built in 1986 and is located nearby Sotheby's Auction House. It has 183 apartments, many of which sell for more than $1 million.

Make your own call on this one. It sounds like everybody talking to the news has already said what they think. I'm not going to give my opinion.

    Information on the building...

    So far, one confirmed fatality.

Wish I could get it past the Proxy they have at work. Listening to CNN is painful. They don't know what is going on and are trying to fill air-time!

    Be safe, everyone involved.

Watching on my local news stations and some "eyewitnesses" say it's a helicopter and others say it's a fixed wing aircraft. One gal with her ratty little dog said it took the fire dept at least 10 minutes to arrive. I saw her again on another channel saying it took 15 minutes. All I definately know the brothers had their hands full and did a great job kicking the crap out of this fire.
