So far, about 22,000 applications have been submitted to take the January test. How does that compare to previous years? (Before they lowered the salary!)

I don't remember the exact numbers but the number is down from years past. 30,000 to 40,000 wasn't unheard of.
The last two exams I think had 27,000 and 25,000 respectively...but I don't have the offical numbers in front of me.
With the large push to get applicants of certain skin colors...many of those applications were from high schoolers who just filled it out with no intention of showing up to the exam or even wanting the job. Last exam this resulted in a sizeable but even absentee rate accross all races and genders.
As for the salary...by the time anyone from this exam gets hired...the starting salary will have been increased back up into the high 30s or even low 40s. The city is already in arbitration with the PBA and that decision will come by late summer. Odds are with 100+ years of parity we will get whatever they shove down the throats of the PBA. So for you I wouldn't worry about the starting salary.
The dumbing down of the written and this joke CPAT with its pass/fail scoring is going to cause more problems than these dopey politicians ever imagined.
Just do your best and you will probably not have any problems, provided these racial hucksters don't get the Fed's involved anymore than they already are.
Best of Luck.

The result will be the exact opposite of what it was designed to achieve.
