I recently applied for a job with my local FD. I have now been scheduled to take a general aptitude test on 12/9. What can I expect on this test, and is there anything I can do to prepare for it?
I've been lurking here for quite some time and have gleaned a good bit of info. I appreciate any input or advice from any of the members here. I'm sure this is just the beginning of many, many questions.
-Make sure you know basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
-I think I have used the formula D=RxT on every test I've ever taken, that is distance=rate x time
-Mechanical reasoning is also a big one, (gears, pulleys, levers)
-Make sure you have strong reading skills
You can go to the library and find tons of books on these subjects to help you out, When I first started testing I would only score in the 70s because I didnt remeber most of that stuff, I studied hard and now mostly score in the 90s.

You can also go to the library and look in the career section and get several books on firefighter test prep. They focus on the written exam, but also give you some other insight on the rest of the process.
The books at the bookstore are excellent. Read through the practice exams and review the questions because the same type appear on the written. The Barrons one is pretty good.Quote:

Try this approach. Instead of taking the sample tests in the written test books cold, go to the answers in the back and go through the first time with the answers. Then you’ll know what they are looking for in the answers. It will cut your learning time. There are only so many ways they can ask a question on the same topic. You will get to the point where you can look at a question and go right to the answer. It will become scary.
Thanks for all of your responses. They are very instructive. From what I can gather (not only from this board, but from other firefighters, friends, etc.), this is the type of test I do well on naturally. Armed with this information, I believe I will excel.
