Can anyone provide me with pictures, or links to pictures, that show the rear of an apparatus that has been covered in reflective chevrons for safety purposes? I'm specifically looking for any pictures of red/white chevrons in an 'A' pattern.
Thanks!

Houston
The chevrons look good and all--but the "KEEP BACK 500 FEET" lettering doesn't stand out at all. Personally, I like the red/yellow stripe like this.

Whatever color you choose...its still a very good idea. Have you considered the front bumper as well?Last edited by skipatrol8; 12-11-2006 at 04:18 PM. Reason: hyperlink issue

Thanks guys. Keep the pictures coming.
We're doing the front bumper with a 6" white scotchlite stripe with our department's name in 4" red letters in the middle.
It looks good and matches our Truck.

Red and white. This is my department's newest engine, and the second with a chevron. We think they're a fantastic addition for safety, and people have actually commented on how noticeable the rear of the rigs are.

Green and yellow, and I know - some will argue the pattern is upside down.

I think this is my last one. Green and white. Yes, I know the poster asked for red and white... I have quite a few red and white if you want them e-mailed direct.

Anyone know of any formal studies that would indicate that a chevron pattern on the rear increases apparatus visibility and safety?

No real studies that I know of from the UK, but this shot was taken at night with little lighting and gives an idea of what the rear visibility of the vehicles is like.

I would think the chevron pattern increasing visibility would come from DOT and or workzone data. There maybe studies that involve Fire Apparatus but I bet there are more for workzones. The basic idea of working in traffic is not just the single emergency situation. Much of the workzone data would be applicable.

Studies about Chevrons
Ken Menke from Power Arc lighting took on the study. He has an extensive ammount of research. I think you may see an NFPA recommendation that will require a chevron with contrasting colors in the next revision. I doubt it will be required to cover the rear of the apparatus but there will most likely be a specificed area to be covered.

Another Black & Red and my personal favorite. Second picture shows the same truck except the picture was taken inside with the flash on. I've been told that black reflective is much brighter at night for the simple reason that it takes much more reflective material to make it shine?? Not sure how much truth there is to it but it does make some sense.
