Does anyone have any information on the New Haven fire department? I’m curious how busy they are, and if they do allot of fires. Any info would help.

Lots of BLS EMS for the engine crews. They run two ALS ambulances to supplement AMR as needed.
As far as fires, nothing unusually crazy.Even the burger-flippers at McDonald's probably have some McWackers.

From my understanding they are one of busiest departments in the state. They are looking to hire 10 this year then over the next 3 years 20 more each year!

New Haven - Nepitism at its best!!! Take the test for experience but don't expect to get on, no matter what your score is.

Go to the dept. page and click on the 2005 fire marshals report, it gives a breakdown of all fires, ems etc.

I don't believe they will be using the CPAT, I think they use their own physical agility test.

test is a joke, plain and simple, they hire who they think they need to make it a more diverse deptartment, like mentioned above take it for experience but dont hold out like i said the city and the vulcan society and the firebirds want certain people to get hired so its a wash, im taking the test for experience thats it.

The open house was back in like June or around then. Applications just have become available, you would have had to gone to the open house then to recieve the packet.

How many candidates typically test? How is the department to work for?

More test than will be hired. I know some guys form NH from the vol fire co. I belong too. Several guy from New Haven taught my Fire 1 class. From what I've heard throught the grapevine, usually they look for people with certs. If you have fire 1/2 or EMT you go in a seperate pile. If you know someone, you go in a seperate pile. It's usually in the best interest of the Dept. to hire people with FF 1 or 2 and/or EMT beacuse then the academy training more so serves as a refresher.
Don't get your hopes completely down, they are known to hire a couple people now and then with out certs or that don't know people.

They dont care about your certs. They dont want someone coming in there who knows it all. If one guy is a fire god and the other knows nothing but happens to have a connection, the connection gets the job.
