    Default AFG 2007 Project - FOAM ???

Looking for some input from other forum members, grant gurus and perhaps applicants who have been successful or unsuccessful with a similar project. Looking down the road at possible projects for 2007 and have been given a couple of ideas to toss around.

We have two wildland apparatus that currently have very poor class A foam systems on them and we would like to upgrade them to an electronic discharge side foam injection system. Cost for equipment is less than $3,500 per truck and the department can do the retrofit, so all labor and any miscellaneous materials and plumbing would be provided by the department.

Our first due structural engine has no built in foam capability, we would like to retrofit a class A/B discharge side foam injection system, or better yet a CAFS retrofit. Don't have cost estimates here, I'm guessing a straight A/B system would be $10,000 and a CAFS retro would be $30,000

Guess I'm looking for opinion on the projected possibility of success with one or more of the above projects. I don't know that you could call this a high priority request? It would be tough to draw a conclusion of enhanced firefighter safety as a result of the project? Reasons for doing the upgrade are good. Class A foam solution is more efficent than water, allows you to do more with less, helps with rural water supply shortages, less rekindle, etc...

A little background info for the department 100% volunteer, covers 400 square miles, 45 calls per year (mosty wildland), $68,000 per year TOTAL budget (this includes capital improvement funds), 7 apparatus - 1 2000 type 1 structural engine, 1 type 2 1979 structural engine, 1 1995 type 3 tanker, 1 1978 type 2 tanker, 1 1986 type 6 wildland engine, 1 1992 type 6 wildland engine, 1 1995 type 6 wildland engine.

The two brush trucks needing the foam upgrade are the 1986 and the 1992, and obviously the structural engine we are considering a retrofit on is the 2000, the 1979 is way past over due for replacement and doesn't warrant the spending of any money.

Let the opinions fly, any and all feedback appreciated.
    Thanks

A department in NY recieved a grant in the 7th round for a CAFS system. The grant was for just over $78,000.

You should be able to contact cozz1119 through his profile. He is the one you can contact for info.

Rick, someone else around here just posted that they were awarded for a foam system this year. I know several have done it successfully. It's not a direct comparison against something like PPE, but each project has merits for certain departments. It's all about going after something you really need, can really justify, and have no way of paying for it.

If that's the highest priority project to improve the safety of your FFs, then go after it. Those are the easiest narratives to write.
