Default Cairns Helmets: N5A vs N6A

So what is the difference between the New Yorker (N5A) and the Houston (N6A)? The N6A is NFPA certified, but why? Based on the MSA/Cairns literature, I can't see/tell a difference between the two.

Major diff is that the 6 has the poly impact cap and is NFPA. The 5 is only osha. Check with your dept - some places you cannot wear the 5.

Also, some of the older 5's seem to have a longer brim in back.

I think I'm gonna buy an N5A and give it a try. I want to see how it compares to the 6. I want a second lid to use when I'm teaching in the burn building anyway, and I refuse to use any of the dept issued salad bowls that I have.

After all, you can never have too many lids, can you?!
    "Real" lids, that is!

I've worn both N5's and N6's, not extensivly mind you. Maybe it was just the way it was adjusted, but I liked the N6A's fit much better. I haven't worn the N5 in a drill but I have worn the N6A in a burn trailer and loved it.

*** Both helmets are my Dad's, I've just recently been issued a Ben2Plus

Difference is a half lb heavier for the N6a, both have the same dimensions. N6a DOES not carry NFPA certification if you dont have goggles attached to it. The n6a also has an additional layer of leather.

I knew about the other things, but this is the first time I've ever heard about the 6 having an extra layer of leather. Why the extra leather?

If you work in a State with OSHA and get hurt with the G5 on be careful. It will probably be deemed your fault and along with the disability pension you lose will go your lawsuit as well!

Well, you might have some issue but I don't think it is quite as bad as that. Saying they would deem it your fault is totally incorrect. At worst you could be found to have been wearing non-accepted gear and as such cotributed to your own demise.

Most states have no fault workers comp- that means no matter what the situation- even if you did something stupid on purpose- you are still covered. And you would most likely only lose your pension if you were justifiably fired over the incident - which I highly doubt would happen for wearing a different helmet.

I am by no means dispensing legal advice here - so do not take it that way- just providing a little experienced opinion.

Just get written permission from your Chief and you will have no problems....

According to their literature, the only difference is the lexan cap in the N6A. It doesn't say anything about extra leather.

I too have never heard anything about an extra layer of leather.

I tell you what someone strip there N5A down and Someone else strip there N6A down. Let me know how it works for you.

I have a N6A but it is no longer compliant anymore.
Took the foam pad out of the top and also removed the ratchet. Fits like a frigging glove. If I had to do it over again I would get the N5A so it would be lighter.

I'm going to be buying a new N5A soon, as my N6A is rapidly becoming (has become, is more fitting) toasted teaching in our live burn facility. I'll dedicate the 6 to teaching and keep the 5 for duty use. No doubt the new one will get crusty soon enough.

So, who has the best price on an N5A deluxe? The best deal I've found so far is $429.
