a few years ago i read an article about a fd who made their own portable deluge gun.

has anyone else done any thing like this with a protable or fixed mount? and what were the results.

Truck carries 1200' of 5", the monitor is 6" Fire Pro and the nozzles are 2,000gpm TFT-Monsoon and 4,000gpm Stang. Chassis is equipped with outriggers and everything is attached to the truck chassis via a bed size half inch steel plate and grade 12 bolts. Supply is by two 5" lines feeding the 6. This is the Hail Mary Truck.

If you are truly talking about making a gun itself I'd think twice. A close friend was a Chief who had a firefighter seriously injured when an old homemade adapter blew apart. OSHA and DOL were quick to take notice that the adapter was not an engineered part and the dept. was allowed to remove all such devices from services in lieu of fines. That still does not take away the firefighters' ability to bring about a lawsuit though I do not believe this was ever a consideration.

There are a lot of physics and forces involved in water delivery and one small misapplication could cause a serious incident.

All that aside, FR had a portable "bomb" line designed by Paul Shapiro that used a true 2.5" water way shut-off, a handle and smoothbore tips that could thow out 500? gpm. This was a year or two before all the "blitzfire" type mini guns came out.

Yes, they call it the Big Paulie Nozzle. Mr. Shapiro was working with these for quite a while before he got TFT to make the Blitzfire. The Big Paulie Nozzle consists of an Elkhart 2 1/2" ball valve with a 1.75" waterway (or an Akron 2 1/2" ball valve with a 2" waterway), a stream shaper, a Big Paulie handle (available for purchase from Mr. Shapiro, fitted to your brand of stream shaper - or make your own), and a tip of your choosing - typically a 1 3/8" or 1 1/2" smoothbore, though you could try to ruin it with a fog tip.

We use all Elkhart components - Elkhart JB-275A jumbo ball valve, an Elkhart 282A shaper, BP handle, and a nice chrome plated 1 3/8" brass deluge tip. They're carried as secondary nozzles, since we leave our Blitzfires pre-connected on our blitz lines.

Two firefighters using a BP nozzle can flow 500-600 gpm out of a 2 1/2" pretty easily - more out of a 3".

We put together our own big paulie too... pretty impressive and simple.
