    Smile NEW Defender Visor

has anyone got the new Defender Visor from Cairns. I think it look safe to use everyday, and i also think it kinda add the image of a pilot to the Firefighter. (for unattached guys mean more ladies). I would like some feedback on the safety of the new Visor.

I tried some on at a fire expo here and was not very impressed out of the four of us that tried the helmet on the visor only fit one of use right the other three it seemed to sit waaaay to close to the face for comfort.
This was just our opinion though myself if your going with something besides a face shield bourkes and/or goggles or safety glasses would be more than enough once again just my thoughts.

We just ordered them. Everyone that tried it, save for 1 or 2, liked it. I don't remember anyone having a problem with it being too close to the face. We did have 1 or 2 with older style glasses that had a problem, but we just ordered goggles for them.

I have one and I really like it. What little bit Bourkes are actually used, it saves them from getting burnt up in a fire. Its fine if you have to have some form of NFPA eye protection attached to your helmet like we do, but for those jakes who still swear by Bourkes, it may be too much. It's just nice to know when I need eye protection, I won't have to fumble through my pocket for safety glasses nor reach up and fold down my curled up Bourkes. The biggest thing is it all depends on the size and shape of your face. If your face is shaped right, it will protect you just fine. If it isn't then you might have to worry about something coming in from the side. Another thing I really like about it is that it doesn't lock into place as many people originally thought, thereby going back up into your helmet if your helmet were to tip up. This really saves the bridge of your nose.

Does anyone know if a defender will work with goggles or does it not matter?

Give it a rest. The Defender just came out a couple months ago. I doubt there are too many threads about it.

We just retro fit 10 helmets with them. I have not tried them but they look like they provide good protection. I understand the retro fit runs around $140.

No problem Bro. Just came across as being kinda snippy. It's not like he asked if you prefer straight stream or fog.

Ok, so I have read about the defender shield and it says that it is NFPA compliant, but does that mean it is NFPA compliant only for extrication or technical rescue situations or is it NFPA compliant for structural firefighting purposes as well.

Why spend 140 dollars to retrofit a helmet when you can spend 160 for a brand new one? I understand there is a 200 dollar difference when you outfit 10 helmets; but does it really make that much difference?

I might be wrong, but to my understanding it does not matter if you have a shield/googles/defender/bourkes, if you are fighting a fire, you better be wearing an SCBA

    Keepback,

We're not retro fitting anything...looking at purchasing new

    Marcus,

Right, of course we're wearing SCBA but didn't know if there was a standard that applied to structural firefighting in regards to helmets. And if so, if the defender met those standards

    The helmet meets NFPA.

The defender shield meets NFPA for eye-protection during non-structure firefighting conditions, and the actual helmet meeds NFPA for interior firefighting conditions as far as heat resistance, protection from falling objects, etc...

Thanks Marcus! That's the clarification I was looking for. I'm sure if I would have just thought through the problem a little more I would have came up with the right answer, but always nice to have another opinion.

I've had mine for some time now. Love it!! Not real great for those who wear glass. They fit great for me though. I'll have to post a pic as soon as I get a chance. I know a few people with leather that want it for theirs. But so far no dice. I know mine was retro fitted. that only cost $85 or so. I don't know where someone got $140.

I got one right after they came out (long story short, I lost my Explorer Post-issued Ben 2). Mine was $140 for the helmet with the defender (1044). I think there's a picture of it on my profile on here and in the helmet picture thread somewhere. I'm still not sure how I like it. I've only really used it a few times. I do know, from playing waterball, that it doesn't fog up.
